November 2, 2017: Happy Anniversary

posted in: Cubs | 1

I told this to my brother as he walked into work on this day.  Another guy asked, what anniversary?  My brother knew.  It was one year ago today that the Cubs won the 1st World Series in our lifetimes.  I think we’ll celebrate this going forward.

As I sit here in my office, I think back on that day… that time.  It was so crazy.  As I look around, I have many reminders.  The World Series champions sticker that is on my window looking down LaSalle St.  A framed Sports Illustrated of that famous Cubs Win cover.  A picture with my son the day after in front of Wrigley, with the famous sign reading World Series Champions.  A picture with my son standing next to the World Series trophy.  Yeah, it won’t be hard to forget… as if I needed those reminders.

I flipped back to my blog from that day… actually dated the day after.  I remember writing it at about 4:30AM… still up… still in shock… here it is:  http://www.thelocalsportstalk.com/november-3-2016-this-was-our-year/.  I read it again.  It was so hard to put everything into one single blog about what that win meant.  I probably wrote a dozen more on the topic… I’ll probably write another dozen.  I could probably write a book.  Maybe I will one day.

I remember being nervous the entire day; I couldn’t get anything done at work…are you kidding me?  But it was probably better that I was AT work… what the heck else would I have done all day with this event about to take place?  Start drinking?  The only game that I had a drink for was Game 2 of the SF series.  Why did I need to drink?  OK, maybe to calm the nerves, but I was already at a certain level… naturally… with all the emotions flowing through me during this period.  No need to enhance that in any way.

I remember all my Cubs jerseys laid out throughout our home.  I remember putting on the same Cubs hat I had on through the entire season… for each and every playoff game.  This hat stunk bad.  Yes, I still have it though.  I remember how the game started…  who could forget that?

Naturally I thought of Devin Hester’s kick return as the only other comparison to how good this game started.  We knew the result of the other, but I’m certainly not going to turn this into a bad omen.  When the Cubs added on, and maintained a lead late, I was feeling pretty good.

The blow that came with that Rajai Davis HR was a brutal one.  My wife left me and went to bed.  In the blog above, I described how I felt in that scariest bottom of the 9th inning ever.  Then the rain delay… it was gut wrenching.

Looking back, you know this was the only way it was going to happen for us.  After that rain delay which caused me to have a new appreciation of rain, and that glorious top of the 10th inning, it was down to 3.  I knew Michael Martinez couldn’t hit it out, could he?  I thought the same about Rajai against Chapman.  He didn’t, and it was over.  Obviously, something I will never ever forget.

I wanted to watch highlights of this season, and I will… eventually.. but we needed to finish out Stranger Things.  Now that we’re done, and now that I have YouTube on my TV, it’s time to enjoy some of those highlights.  Just like those 85 Bears highlights still haven’t gotten old…  I can see myself watching these Cubs highlights until the day I die.  Happy 1st Anniversary Cubs fans!

Happy 1 year anniversary Cubs nation! What a great 2016 it was as the Cubs finally won it all! I detailed my feelings on a previous blog, but seeing the Cubs be the last team standing, celebrating on the field, popping bottles, and holding the trophy was the ultimate. All the years of suffering vanished. Even this year’s disappointing exit in the nlcs doesn’t seem to hurt as bad. The 2016 Cubs are forever champions! I watched highlights of the 2016 playoffs and still get teary-eyed and probably always will. Even though we lived every moment of those playoffs, it is awesome to look back and see the highlights. They will never get old. 2016 will forever be the year of the Cubs! Happy 1 year anny and looking forward to Winning another one! GO CUBS GO!!!
