November 30, 2015: 44-0

It was supposed to be a marquee matchup.  The 10-0 Chicago Bears march into Texas Stadium to take on the 7-3 Dallas Cowboys.  What transpired next would go down as the worst defeat in Cowboys history, and another feather in the Bears cap as they steamrolled through the 1985 season.

Vegas thought it was going to be a good game too.  Simlarly to this week with Carolina and Dallas, Vegas liked the boys at home vs an undefeated team.  At game time, the line was a PK.  Vegas would not make this mistake again.  It’s that overrated quality of the Cowboys… it was like that 30 years ago and remains like that today.  Poor chaps…  the Bears would make them a front page story.

44-0! is what it read on the Sports Illustrated cover that week.  It was Steve Fuller at the helm guiding the offense with Payton at his side gaining another 100 yards rushing; that’s 6 in a row for anyone counting.  But this game was more about the defense than anything…

It was Ditka’s first regular season game in Dallas after coaching there under Tom Landry.  He almost felt bad about what happened that day; I’m sure Buddy Ryan and that 46 defense didn’t.  I remember this game like it was yesterday…

The Sunday trip to the mall was really fought that year, especially on this Sunday…. but, we all piled into the station wagon and headed to Orland Square mall.  My dad had the game on the radio in the car as Hampton deflected Danny White’s pass at the goalline, Richard Dent grabbed it, and then fell into the end zone:  the beginning of the end.  We were on LaGrange Road when that play happened… almost to the mall.  Once we arrived, we never made it out of the first store.  We watched the rest of the game in the Sears TV section along with a bunch of other spectators.  This was can’t miss TV for God’s sake!  The Bears were undefeated and they were about to put the hurting on these Texas boys.

The next TD was defensive again, as LA Mike took an INT to the house.  It was one of the most dominating performances by the defense in a year where there were many.  6 sacks… check.  Forced fumble… check.  4 picks… check.  Knocked out starting QB… check.  2 defensive TDs… check.  Shutout… check.  I remember the Otis Wilson sack that knocked Danny White out of the game…  I actually watched some show on NFL network where White talked about that sack and that game…  hilarious stuff.

Who scored the 3 offensive TDs that day for the Bears could be a trivia question that not many would get.  Steve Fuller, Calvin Thomas, and Dennis Gentry all scored rushing TDs.  11-0 was the record now; the NFC Central division was clinched.

Thinking about all those great regular season victories over the years, which now includes the 2015 Turkey Day beating of Green Bay in their house on Favre retirement day, this one ranks up there.  It’s actually unfair to even include this 1985 season on a list of best regular season games; that’s a list all by itself.  I think that’s a good idea… to make that list of most memorable regular season wins.

This one was definitely that.  Whenever I think of the Cowboys, I think of this game.  This beatdown.  This annihilation.  Regardless of their Super Bowl victories, this feels like a trump card over those boys & their fans.  Just like these Bears, 44-0 will never be forgotten.  What can we possibly do to top this game?  The Falcons are up next in Soldier Field, and believe it or not, we got pretty close to matching it.
