October 1, 2015: The Perfect Quarter

posted in: Bears | 1

Another way to avoid the buzzkill is to keep walking down memory lane with the 85 Bears.  With the Cubs just prepping for that one game playoff, let’s go back to Week 4 in the NFL 30 years ago.

It was a matchup at home against the Washington Redskins.  I remember this game pretty clearly.  My grandmother lived upstairs from us growing up; I was up there when I saw Willie Gault take back the kickoff for 99 yards that turned this game around.  It hadn’t started too well… with the Redskins taking a 10-0 lead.  Would they avenge last year’s playoff loss and give the Bears their first loss of this 85 season?  Not exactly…

The Willie Gault kick return was the first strike.  On that play, the Redskins kicker/punter got hurt on the play, so on the next Washington series, when it came to 4th down, it was none other than Joe Theismann that punted the ball… if you call it that.  A 1 yard punt set the Bears up for their next strike, and just like that it was 14-10 Bears.  They never looked back.  Finishing with 31 points in the 2nd quarter, the Bears went into the half with a comfortable lead.  They added 14 more points in the 2nd half to win 45-10.

One of the other memorable plays in this game was the Walter Payton to Jim McMahon TD pass.  After McMahon handed the ball to Payton, he snuck out of the backfield.  Walter lofted it up to him.  Jim laid out to make a beautiful TD grab.  That was fun.

You know what else was fun… the recap of the 1985 season put together by ABC before the Super Bowl that year.  It was hosted by Janet Davies, and was called Play it Again Bears.  I highly recommend looking this up on YouTube… classic stuff.  I remember watching that, and linking that 80s music to the game whose highlights it accompanied.  For this game, the first highlight was the Willie Gault 99 yard kickoff return… da da da, da da da, da da da da da, da da da, da da da, da da da da da… Not sure the name of the song, but I think it’s like Off to the Races or something like that.  It’s crazy how some of this stuff sticks, and it’s awesome to be able to watch it again and remember.

The Redskins had some good teams that would eventually come back and get that revenge later in the 80s. But as far as this year, not them or anybody was going to slow down this freight train. Ok, one team did, and unfortunately we didn’t get our revenge against them, but nobody else.  Just watching the different stuff on this team that’s out there on YouTube is fun.  I can still see most of those highlights from that year, and remember those feelings at the time. You started to get a feeling this was something special…like you didn’t want to miss a game.

And after the first 4 games of the season, the Bears didn’t miss one; the perfect quarter. 31 points in the 2nd on this week wasn’t too shabby either. Next up, a trip down to Tampa Bay to play those bright colored unis.  Five for five?  You know the drill.

85 Bears had playmakers on both sides of the ball! How awesome is it to have talent and heart? Sweetness to punky qb vs skins was nice! Play it again Bears is an awesome review…definitely must watch! Wish I could say the same about our current Bears!
