October 16, 2017: Trained

posted in: Cubs | 1

It’s how he trained us.  This is why we question him, especially the latest decision to NOT bring in Wade Davis in the 9th inning of Game 2 on Sunday night.

Who was the guy who told us there is no tomorrow if we don’t get past today?  We remember that stuff.  The biggest example was the way he used Aroldis Chapman in the World Series.  8 out save in Game 5 at Wrigley.  Bringing him in up 5 runs in Game 6 in Cleveland.  There is no Game 6 if we don’t win Game 5.  There is no Game 7 if we don’t win Game 6.  This is how we have been trained.

So, going down that path, the thought last night should have been there is no 10th inning if we don’t get through the 9th inning.  I could have even understood it if we were the home team; at least we get last bats.  But if we don’t get through the bottom of the 9th, and we didn’t, then there would be no extra innings; there would be no other chances to win that game.  With that being said, Wade Davis should have been brought in the game.

I was shocked to see Duensing in to start the 9th, but OK.  But when Joe went to the pen, it should have been Davis… period.  But it wasn’t…  Joe brought in Lackey.

Hey, I called for Lackey to come in earlier in Game 1; different situation for sure.  But at that point last night, to bring him in…. But we still had a chance to do the right thing.  When he lost Taylor, and got to Turner; no fricking way.  There’s just no way.  I would have loved to see him throw a strike to Taylor vs one right down the middle to Turner.

I know I’m not the only one who feels this way.  I see all kinds of stuff out there; haven’t read it, because I’m aggravated as hell about it too.  My only explanation is that Wade wasn’t feeling like himself when he was up in the pen.  I have to believe that.  I’d rather believe that then think that Joe was “saving him for the save”, because that’s a load of BS, especially coming from him.

Here’s the bottom line though.  If Joe didn’t completely go against his principles that he taught us, and Wade is really not himself, then we are in real trouble from here on out.  So maybe I hope Joe did flip flop on his philosophy for a day… and that’s not to mention why he didn’t pinch hit for Almora in the 9th against the best right handed closer in the game not named Wade Davis.

I chalked up Game 1; this one definitely hurt more.  However, I’m still not outside on the ledge yet; that was when we were down 3-1 in the World Series last year.  Regardless of your thoughts on this specific subject, the bigger problem, no doubt, is the disappearance of the bats.  Because regardless of how bad the bullpen has been, we had a real chance to win Game 2; you could make the same case for Game 1.  Is their bullpen that good?  Are we just going through one of the many slumps we had during the year?

Well, today is a day off, and if you remember, there were a couple days off during the year, where we regrouped, got our stuff together, and came out like gang busters.  Here’s hoping…

Until then, I will believe Wade was not feeling himself, and that’s why Joe didn’t use him; maybe there was no intention to use him once he was up in the pen.  I have to believe that because I have to still trust in Joe.  And if I have to trust in Joe, then I will believe that “saving him for the save” was just a cover up, because we all know that’s BS, because Joe taught us it was.  Get me?

OK.  I’m done.  Down 2-0, not the end of the world.  If we win Tuesday, then we’re in the same exact position we were last year against the Dodgers, and we know how that turned out.  One difference… LA has home field advantage.  So regardless of the fact they held serve, and regardless of the fact if we hold serve, we will have to win in LA; I’m not telling you anything you don’t know.  But it starts with 1…  Time for some home cooking.  Go Cubs!

Like you stated in a previous blog, second guessing Maddon is becoming easier and easier. He is making some decisions that make me scratch my head. Not bringing in WD71 in the 9th is the latest one. Actually, I was surprised that Duensing started the 9th. I was ok with Lackey coming in to face taylor. Once he walked him, though, it was time to bring in WD71 to face their best. At the end of the day, we have to trust in Joe. Even more important, guys have to do their damn jobs! The starters have been keeping the Cubs in it without their best stuff. The bullpen has no room for error because the Cubs cannot score. Again, walks are killing. How the hell do you walk taylor with their best player on deck to win the game? Makes no damn sense. Throw a fastball down the middle to taylor and see wtf he can do with it. The Cubs offense needs to do something. KB and Rizzo are not alone with the struggles, but they are the Cubs big guns who need to get going. A 2run shot by Almora and a solo shot by Addy…that is it. Give some credit to lala starters and pen, but there is no way that the Cubs should not be scoring. This day off is much needed, I believe. Down 2-0…lala did what they had to. Now it is time for the Cubs to answer and in a big way. Blow darvish out of the water and then get to their pen. Put up double digit runs and cut the deficit in half. No way in hell are the Cubs done. This series is just getting started. If the Cubs bats wake up, they could win the next 4 and the series! Come on Cubbies! GO CUBS GO!!!
