October 28, 2014: Mulligan Time

posted in: Bears | 1

Man was it a nice day yesterday… nice enough to get another round of golf in for the year.  I take plenty of mulligans when I’m out on the course… I needed one this week for my football picks.  I needed one this week in my fantasy league.  We all needed one this week for the Bears.  This was a bad week.  Period.

My picks went 0 for 5.  I lost my fantasy matchup because of them.  That’s what I get for linking my fantasy team with my fantasy picks.  My record now stands at a disappointing 19-29.  I’d be happy with .500.  I’d be happy with breaking even on these against the grain picks.  I don’t regret making them.  Hindsight is a mother… sometimes it just happens, and when it rains, it pours.

Each pick hurt in a different way.  The benching of Tom Brady this week in favor of Carson Palmer turned out to be the deciding factor in my matchup.  Palmer didn’t do that bad, but Brady torched the Bears, and that 20 points I left on the bench was the difference between a win and a loss.  The benching of Heath Miller in favor of Clay Harbor also cost me 20 points; I evened it out by starting John Brown over Brian Quick, but although Brown had a great fantasy week, I chose to go against Maclin in my picks.  I tried to avoid the #1 rated WR this week in Demaryius… Maclin was the top scoring WR this week…. bad timing on that pick.  Giovanni Bernard had another below average week while Jamaal Charles was one of the top scoring RBs.  Again, looking back at that trade… I would have won this week had I not made it.  The wild card pick of Doug Martin over Steve Smith would have been great had Martin not got hurt, since Smith had a bad game, but like I said… when it rains it pours.

So here I sit 3-5 in my fantasy league… same record as the Bears.  I’ll continue to manage my team aggressively; making roster moves based on MY projections.  It didn’t work out this week, but that won’t change my game.  I won’t sit back and start taking the chalk in my picks either, just like I won’t start & sit guys based on the “experts”.  Although I was the farthest thing from one this week….

Looking at our division, the Lions continued to live a charmed life.  With a delay of game penalty on the missed FG kick which gave them another opportunity that they made, they won again.  There was still one second on the clock when the ball was hiked, so I’m not sure why the penalty.  Papa Vegas lurking?  I hope we have our shit together enough to beat these guys.  I’m starting to feel a little more hate than normal towards them…  The team I do hate lost, which brings a smile to my face; it was little consolation to the bad week I just went through, but have to look for a silver lining… always.

Dallas took one on the chin which was the 2nd silver lining of the week, while Arizona continues to be a surprise team.  Their matchup next week should be a good one.  Who saw the 51 points Pittsburgh put up against Indy coming?  Probably the same people that knew the Pats would match that total against us.  You just never can tell week to week in this league.  What will be the next surprise?

With the bye week at hand, I really need to take a mental break from the Bears.  I did last week… for like a day; this time it will be much longer than that.  Then they come back and play at Lambeau on Sunday night.  No place to run, no place to hide.  They better get their house in order or it could be another blowout… another loss against the cheese.  That may end our season.  Too early for a must win?  Need one… need a good game.  We’ve already used up all of our mulligans…
