October 7, 2014: Above Water

Week 5 in the NFL wasn’t much fun for us Bears fans.  It was however very fun for me from a fantasy perspective, both with a win in my league and a 3-2 record with my picks.  It’s the first time I’ve been above .500 with my underdog picks for a week; now we’re gertting somewhere.

I should have been 4-1.  Brady had a great week, but New Orleans had to go to OT, so Brees got some extra points and edged him.  I guess the morale of the story here is if you played Brady over Brees you still would have been OK.  I just missed on that one.  The one where I was completely wrong was at WR.  I guess I woke a sleeping giant in D Thomas from Denver.  Jesus… I think he had the biggest week this year so far by a WR.  Larry Fitzgerald may be ready to ride into the sunset… maybe the Bears can trade for him to get Cutler ANOTHER weapon, since he and Trestman apparently still don’t have enough to score more than 3 points in a half.

So with the 2 losses out of the way, let me bask in the glory of my 3 correct picks.  Two of them were more about the guys I was trying to top having really bad games.  When I saw Doug Martin’s numbers flash across the screen, I chalked that up for a loss.  That was, of course, until I saw Shady’s output this week.  That helped me win this pick and win this week in fantasy.  He is crossing into early season bust territory with another stinker.  At TE, I took down the fantasy darling TE.  Donnell had 0 pts!  ZERO POINTS!  Get out of here you damn flash in the pan.  Another performance that helped me in my fantasy matchup this week.  All I needed to do was pick a TE who got one catch this weekend… and I did.  Zach Ertz came in with 3 catches, and a winning TE pick for me.

Taking a swing around the NFL shows the Pack heating up.  All they needed was a Bears game to get their season headed in the right direction.  I’m glad the Lions choked a game away against the same Buffalo team that took us out week 1.  We can’t have both the Pack and the Lions make the playoffs; that would leave us out.  The undefeateds went down, with Arizona getting crushed by Denver, and Cincinnatti getting stomped by the Pats.  Arizona isn’t going anywhere, while Cincy will be just fine.  Thankfully I didn’t need a big game from Giovanni on Sunday night… but I will need him the rest of the year.

As we wrap up week 5, we know more than ever it’s a week to week league.  It is proven out every week by teams that are supposedly left for dead.  This week it was New England.  Two weeks ago it was the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers.  Heck, in week 2 it was Da Bears.  Winning and losing each week is overvalued… that’s what we do as fans; it’s our fault.  We put ourselves through this rough ride.  All I know is this:  Winning cures all.  All this negative talk about the Bears, and any team for that matter, can all be cured by one thing:  a win.  We need a dose of that next week in Atlanta, in a game we will be heavy underdogs.  Getting a win gets us back on track, and keeps us above water, or at least gets us back to .500… let’s start there.
