September 10, 2017: Tri-Suck-Ta

So there’s no confusion… I’m throwing in my loss in the Fantasy Baseball playoffs along with the Cubs and the Bears on this Sunday.  It was a rough day across the board.  It didn’t start that way…

Had to mix up the wardrobe to the Cubs game on this day.  Still had the Cubs jersey and hat, but had to wear that Bears t-shirt under the jersey.  There aren’t that many Bears Sundays that I don’t have something Bears on…  Got a late start to Wrigley, but no problem; that’s what Jeff and Tom are for.  Listened to the first few minutes of the Bears game on the radio headed to the park.  Love day games at Wrigley, if for anything, the parking.  No need to walk 2 miles to get to the game, or pay $40.  Nope, finding parking on the streets is no biggie for day games, and that’s just what we did.  Now, getting to Wrigley…

We did have to stop and get some empanadas.  They didn’t last 1 block; they were delicious.  As we arrived, I saw what I wanted to see:  the Bears game being shown on the big (and I mean BIG) TV outside Wrigley.  It was awesome.  Standing there with a beer in my hand, watching the Bears score the first points of 2017, as Barth’s 54 yarder went through the uprights; everybody started cheering.  Can’t stay out here too long; have to get to our seats.  I mean, we’re in the bleachers, so we need to get to our seats…

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; there isn’t much better than sitting in the bleachers in Wrigley on a beautiful day watching our first place Cubs. We were ready for the Cubs game to begin.  I got the text that the Bears were tied at the half.  I checked my fantasy score, and I was only down 12 points; I was down 60 points mid-Saturday.  The stage was set for an awesome Sunday.

That plan that we love to see come together doesn’t always go according to plan.  When Rivera’s line drive ricocheted off Perez’ glove in right field, the Cubs claimed the lead; all was good.  But… that was it.  The full crowd waiting to explode at any moment never got that moment.  It was a sobering 3-1 loss, and worse yet, a sweep at the hands of the Brewers.  The only way this series means anything is if they swept us… and they did… and St Louis swept their series too.  So it will be true; no matter how bad I wanted the Cubs to run away with this division, I had a feeling it would come down to it.  And with a 2 game lead over both the Brewers and Cards, with 19 games left to play (4 more against Milwaukee and 7 against St. Louis), it comes down to this.  The best part about this situation is that it is still in the Cubs control how this season’s story will end.  With a 2 game lead and all those games against the trailers, it’s really up to us.  Hoping Monday’s day off helps us recharge those batteries for the most important stretch of the year… more to come.

Out of the tri-suck-ta, this one had to hurt the most.  The Bears…. yeah, it was only week 1, and although an upset would have been nice, nobody expected much.  My fantasy team?  It’s just a fantasy team you know?  But the Cubs took the cake on this Sunday, and I was there to witness in person; double tri-suck-ta.  And about those Bears… let’s talk some more about that game next.

The triple L…ouch! With the fantasy playoff loss flying in at the bottom, the Bears losing a game vs the defending nfc champs, that they had a chance to and should have won, is hurtful. It is these type of games that the Bears have been horrible at lately. 1 score games, chance to win, and come up short. That is the definition of a team that is not very good. Good teams find ways to win. The Bears played well enough to win and should have. 0-1…more to come. As for the Cubs, the roller coaster continues after flying down a huge incline. A sweep to the brewcrew? OUCH! A comfy 5 game lead has now turned into a nail biting 2 game lead vs the brew and red turds. The Cubs cannot afford to have losing streaks right now. They have series vs both teams left and cannot be swept again. Time to throw some more coal into the Cubbie blue train. Need to start rolling again to finish this season with a 3rd straight playoff berth. Nobody said it would be easy, but the Cubs are in position, and have the season in their own hands, to make it happen! As my shirt says, Just Do It…AGAIN! GO CUBS GO!!!
