September 16, 2017: Weekend Starter

posted in: Cubs | 1

What’s the best way to start a weekend?  Starting it earlier!  Taking a Friday off is the best weekend starter, and with the weather we have in Chicago right now, you can’t go wrong.

Now what to do…  We left it up to my son.  After all, he is the reason I took off; he was out of school on this Friday, and we were going to take advantage.  He wanted to go to the Shedd Aquarium; you know it’s free for a couple weeks?  That’s always a plus in deciding what to do.  However, with the weather being so nice, we didn’t want to spend it indoors; we’ll have plenty of time for that.  That eliminated the other museums as well.

It boiled down to 2 choices:  Lincoln Park Zoo or Wrigley Field.  Of course I would want to go to a Cubs game, especially on a Friday afternoon in September against the Cardinals trying to keep the NL Central lead.  There is a price to that of course.  We could have got in for about $120 for 3 tickets, which isn’t that bad.  My son however, wanted to go to the zoo.  We were just there a couple weeks ago…but we did say it was his choice.  To the zoo we go!

It’s always nice to go to the zoo, especially Lincoln Park; it’s free!  As members, we get the unlimited free parking; it’s a no brainer.  We went every week for a long time.  Now, it’s every once in a while.  With the addition of the penguins and polar bears, the experience is that much better.  The macaques are cool too.  An underrated part of the zoo is the bird house.  There were birds just walking right next to us; I did almost get clipped by a few of them flying right by my head.  Then there’s the seals, the gorilla house, the rhinos…the list goes on.  Of course my son’s favorite is the lion house.  We got a good look at them this afternoon.

All in all about 3 hours at the zoo.  The time was now after 2pm.  I got a text asking if I had seen Lackey and Contreras get ejected; WTF?!?  As we got in the car and I turned on Pat and Ron, the game was in the bottom of the sixth.  Nice timing huh?

The Cubs exploded and put the game away.  It would give us that important first game of the series; we would not have deja vu from when the Brewers came into town.  It would be our 4th win in a row with only 15 games to play.  I’m sticking to that 19 in a row to end the season.

By the time we made it back across the city in Friday traffic, it was time to close it out and catch up on all the glorious highlights.  A Cubs win is always the perfect way to start a weekend.  But they say it’s not about how you start…  Let’s talk about what happened next.  Go Cubs!

What a game to open the series against the red turds! At the time, it was a huge call that went against the Cubs. An obvious strike 3 that would have gotten the Cubs out of the inning and kept the game tied. Instead, it was called a ball and a single later led to the ejections. Lackey was ready to blow his top. So was Willson. Deservedly so but still…have to keep that composure boys! Let Joe get tossed. All good, though. The Cubs turned things up for a 7 spot in the bottom of the 6th to keep these red turds where they belong…behind us. Game 1 of the series was a great one and a much needed W for the Cubbie blue train that rolled to 4 wins in a row…I like the 19-0 to finish the year…possible? How would the Cubs handle the weekend games? Let’s just say that they left the red turds featherless! GO CUBS GO!!!
