April 9-17: May 11-16: June 15-13: July 10-16: August 16-14: September 1-0

These are the Cubs win loss records by month.  For me, it’s just something else to get excited about.  Of course, it doesn’t mean a damn thing for this year.

Year 3 of the rebuilding plan is in its final month.  When the year ends in 24 games, it will be another losing season.  But, as always, I will look for a silver lining with this team.  Are they going in the right direction?  If this was a poll question, I would wager that 90% of people would say YES.

Just looking at the month by month records shows improvement.  After the horrible 2 month start (1 game in March), the Cubs record has been 42-43.  They have basically played .500 ball in the past 3+ months of the regular season.  If they could have done that to start the season, they would be in the middle of the wild card chase.  Accepting another year of losing is a little easier this year; it appears the corner is about to be turned.  It appears the Cubs will have a window that will be opening up next year, and according to Theo, will be open for a long time.

We’ve made what appears to be our last dump of players, in the trading of Samardzija and Hammel on July 4, which most definitely had an immediate impact on our record in July.  Once that was complete, and the new pitchers, Hendricks and Wada got going, our August record improved.  Yes, August also saw the addition of Baez and Soler.  Both guys hit 3 HRs in their first 3 games; a feat that was only done once since the turn of the century.  Earlier in the year, we had the arrival of Alcantara.  He has played OK too.  You can definitely look at the negatives of these guys, the strikeouts of Baez, the leg issues of Soler, and the streakiness of Alcantara.  Every player will go through these things; I’m just glad they’re going through them THIS year.

The return of Rizzo and Castro, that I spoke about many times here, has been another huge positive for the Cubs this year.  We needed them to be good, and they have been.  These are our leaders going forward, and they need to perform well on the field.  Another surprising turn of events for this club has been the pitching.  Jake Arrieta is here to stay, while Hendricks and Wada, have performed well early in their careers.  In the bullpen, Rondon has performed nicely as the closer, while Neil Ramirez has been the biggest surprise with a 0.99 ERA.  Strop and Wright both also hold ERAs under 3.00 coming out of the bullpen.

What about Ricky Renteria?  I like him better than Sveum.  Is he just a temporary guy?  Well, believing the Cubs can compete as soon as next year, he will have a chance to prove that he is more than that.  While I don’t agree with every move he makes, he has done well.  I guess managing in another throw-away year is easy enough.  How will he do when the games mean a little more?  How will the Cubs perform when they play meaningful games in September?

We will play meaningful games this September, except they are only meaningful for the teams we will be playing.  Beating Milwaukee today knocked them out of 1st place for the first time since April 4.  I was surprised to see that, and surprised on how well the Brewers have played all year.  I look for another month of above .500 ball for the Cubbies.  They have already surpassed their win total from 2012, and will pass last year’s total with 5 more wins.  With a 13-11 finish, they can tie their best record in the past 5 years.

Step by step is how the Theo regime has been working this.  We finally appear to be heading in the right direction again.

heading in the right direction is correct. however, i think castro needs some off-season mental toughening and soul searching. he’s in a position to be one of the leaders on this club, but doesn’t seem to have his head in the right place a lot of times. if he can overcome those mental lapses, he’ll improve.

Castro, is no leader, good player, all-star…Rizzo is the one and only. I still think you need a vetern guy, whos been there, done that.

Ricky Renteria- one more year, thats it. Hes a decent manager, but is he able to take these players to the next step…all of them at once? I don’t think so. You need to be able to deal with these guys when they become superstars.(egos start to grow)…now is the easy part..next step is very hard..when the cubs get to the playoffs.
