September 24, 2017: Business Handled

posted in: Cubs | 1

We had some business to attend to this weekend in Milwaukee.  A series split would be the bare minimum.  After winning the first 2 games of the series, we were guaranteed of that.  Anything now was gravy.

I forgot they were even playing in the afternoon on Saturday.  I picked it up in the 3rd inning.  Another tightly played game, which found the Cubs ahead by 1 run heading to the bottom of the 9th.  It was Mr. Perfect time.  The whole time, through the whole streak, I wasn’t avoiding saying it… Wade Davis is perfect in save opportunities.  There was no fear of jinxes.  The guy has been spectacular.  So when FOX tried to talk about how hard it is to hit Wade Davis, as he gave up the game tying home run, I wasn’t mad; actually, I was a bit happy.

I was happy because if he was going to lose his streak of perfection, it might as well happen in the regular season.  I didn’t want to see this happen in the postseason, which with our Magic Number at 2 after Sunday’s win is almost a certainty.  Good.  That’s out of the way.  The guy has still been phenomenal.  I still have the utmost confidence in him.  It happens.  After all, we knew the Cubs would come back and win it in the 10th…

And actually, they did score in the 10th, which lined it up for a 3rd straight 10th inning win.  Personally, I wouldn’t have brought Wade back out.  He just blew his save streak; get somebody else in there.  But… Wade marched back out there, and promptly lost the game.  I’m still not worried about him.  And I really wasn’t that devastated over the loss…

On Sunday, we sent the final message to the Brew Crew; you ain’t ready for this.  Quintana, whom, I’ll say it again, was a great, great pickup for the Cubs, made sure there was no 4th straight extra inning affair.  A complete game shutout!  Zorilla 2 run bomb; Rizzo 2 run double.  As the game progressed, there wasn’t a doubt who the better team was.  We knew it all along.  We felt that way in the weekend series at Wrigley that didn’t prove out.  We have our proof now.  Business handled.

And now we head to St. Louis… after Wrigley, I don’t think there is a better place to clinch another division title.  Look at me… “another” division title… haha.  Yes, it will almost certainly be a 2nd straight NL Central title, and a 3rd straight playoff appearance.  To do it in front of the Cardinal fans, who ruled this division for so long, will be even sweeter.  Times have changed boys.  Ain’t no going back.  I love you Dex, but you’re on the wrong side of things now.  The Cardinals will have to get used to this view… looking up at the Cubs in the standings.  We knew we were the superior team all along; I’m glad we’re finally showing it.  And just in time…

Just in time for another postseason appearance.  OK, I’ll stop there.  Yeah, the confidence is flowing a bit.  Still have 2 more games to win… or maybe 1 more if the Brewers lose vs the Reds on Tuesday.  The Cubs are playing their best, winning 10 of their last 12 games.  Yeah, I know it isn’t 22 straight, or 19 straight as I predicted to end the season, but it’s been damn good.  Yes, we are good.  We always knew we were.  Go Cubs!!!

WD71 is no longer perfect, and that is fine with me. I think we all knew it was only a matter of time. Better for it to happen now than in the postseason. WD71 has been aWesome this year. Not sure why Joe brought him back out for the 10th, but the Cubs gave a game back to the brewcrew. On to Sunday, the Cubs left no doubt who the better team was and all but guaranteed a back to back nl central crown. Q was amazing and has been since coming to the Cubs. I believe he has an ERA just over 2.00 since joining the Cubs. A complete game shutout with 10 k’s. Yeah, the Cubs took 3 of 4 at Wrigley North and lowered the magic number to 2. Now, they head to stl for another 4 game road series…interesting scheduling by the mlb with back to back 4 game road series. All good, time to show the red turds who the boss is of the nl central. Win the first 2 games and celebrate on their field…pop champagne baby! The Cubs are ready. Take 2 and rest up. The real journey begins in a week. GO CUBS GO!!!
