September 29, 2015: The Punky QB

posted in: Bears | 1

Back to our 30 year tribute to the 85 Bears…  Last we talked, the Bears began their season 2-0.  They were heading into a primetime matchup with the Vikings on Thursday night.  It would go down as one of the most memorable games in Bears history.

I actually didn’t watch this game, but I did see most of the highlights.  I was at the old Comiskey Park watching the Sox game, as this Bears game was unfolding.  This Sox game made the list of best games I attended for this very reason.  The crowd did not have much to cheer about on the field, but when they flashed each of the TD passes as they happened on the big screen, and as we watched the Bears come back from behind to beat the Vikings, we went bananas.

Let’s set the stage for this one.  Our starting QB Jim McMahon was in the hospital earlier in the week (remember this was a short week), getting treatment for his back.  He was not going to be starting this game.  The good thing about these Bears, is that our backup QB was pretty decent.  Steve Fuller took the helm in this one, and many others during this magical season.  He kept this team rolling, but on this very night, the Bears were trailing 17-9 halfway through the 3rd quarter.  Yeah, I did a little reading up on this game… and some highlight watching.

McMahon argued with Ditka all game about putting him in the game.  WOW!  For a regular season game???  In Week 3???  After being in the hospital a couple days ago???  Now you know why we feel the way we do about our present QB.  Yeah, the guy that stood (stood!) on the sidelines during the 2nd half of the NFC championship game vs Green Bay.  Yeah, the guy who walked off the field last week, and ended up being diagnosed with a strained hamstring???  Yes, the punky QB and the punk QB were definitely cut from different cloths.  So as McMahon continued to badger him (yes, Iron Mike crazy ass Ditka), Ditka gave in.  McMahon trotted on the field with 7:22 left in the 3rd.

The Vikings dually noted this, and brought the heat on the first play.  With a blitzing LB coming up the middle with a free run at our hobbled QB, #34 LIT HIM UP.  Yeah, he not only ran, caught, and threw the ball… yeah, he was OK at blocking too.  This gave McMahon, who stumbled away from center by the way, the chance to look down field, and hit a streaking Willie Gault for a 70 yard TD.  YouTube the play.. please.  Just like that, #9’s first pass brought the Bears to within 1 point.  What would he do for an encore?

Well, I’m glad you asked.  The encore came pretty quickly after Wilber Marshall intercepted a Tommy Kramer pass.  The Bears defense gave up the 3rd most points they would all season on this night, but they got some key turnovers, led by Wilber… one of the most fastest, most destructive LBs I’ve ever seen play.  2nd play from scrimmage came from the Minnesota 25 yard line.  Run the ball right?  Nope, McMahon dropped back, and on his 2nd pass of the night, found Silky D in the end zone.  2 passes= 2 TDs.  Bears up 23-17.  YouTube this one too… sick.

We had to wait until his 7th pass of the game to see the 3rd and final TD of what would be one of the greatest performances, if not THE greatest, of the Punky QB’s career.  He found McKinnon again for 43 yards.  Matter of fact, just YouTube 1985 Bears vs Vikings to see all of these.

The broadcast team was wowed, just as everybody else.  The reason I mention them is because the team that night was OJ Simpson, Joe Namath, and Frank Gifford.  Classic.  33-24 was the final score after the smoke settled.  A Chicago Bears legend was born.

Isn’t it nice to go back in time?  Enduring a brutal 0-3 start with the 2015 version, led by #6, this tribute comes at the perfect time.  This 1985 team moved to 3-0 with this masterpiece.  This Bears team was led by #9… not the most talented QB, but the one with the most heart and desire and leadership.  3 qualities that are severely lacking in today’s version.  In fact, I miss the old #6… Kevin Butler, the rookie kicker on this team.

But this is about our happy place, not our current place.  Whenever times are rough for the Bears, we always have this.  We can close our eyes and think about this Bears team.  We can remember when the Monsters of the Midway ruled the NFL world.  We can remember when we had a team full of players we all loved.  We can remember when the Bears made us proud.

This week 3 game in 1985 was one of the all time best Bears games.  It was a game like this that would propel us to the next level.  I think a lot of people knew the Bears would be good that year.  I’m not sure anyone knew they would be this special.  A date at home with the Washington Redskins was next on the slate for this 3-0 Bears team.  Week 4 is next!
