September 30, 2014: Four Score

posted in: Bears | 0

With week 4 in the books, we sit one quarter into the NFL season.  To be honest, after a Bears loss to Green Bay, I really don’t feel like talking about football period, but…….. we press on.

My picks were polar opposites.  At the QB position and RB position, I was way off.  Maybe Geno Smith does suck.  Stafford and the Lions played well, as he outperformed Geno.  The story at running back was similar, as Lamar Miller smashed McFadden.  The idiot picks were official.

The WR and TE picks were the genius picks.  Steve Smith and Heath Miller had monster games, as they easily outpointed Andre Johnson and Antonio Gates.  Its picks like these, kind of like those rare great golf shots, that keep me coming back.  Now if only I can find some consistency… isn’t that always the story?

So at 2-2, the outcome of the weekly picks came down to the Wild Card pick which came down to Monday Night.  With Cordarelle having a horrible game, I needed a miracle… a worse game from Gronk.  He DID have a bad game, but it was better than Cordarelle.  I can’t believe with all those points, Patterson didn’t do more.

The record stands at 10-17.  I thought a winning week was in reach, but I came in at 2-3.  Damn.

A look around the league at the quarter point, sees the Bengals and Cardinals as the only undefeateds.  They’re both 3-0.  I think the Bengals are legit, while the Cardinals… well, I can see them still finishing under .500 for the year.  On the flip side, you have Oakland and Jacksonville at 0-4.  I think it’s a pretty safe bet that one of these teams will end up with the number 1 pick in next year’s NFL draft.  So much for my darkhorse Raider playoff prediction….

Back to the Chicago connections… Devin Hester got in the end zone… again.  Did I mention that burns me?  Lovie also got off the hook with his first victory, a surprising one over Pittsburgh.  I bet lots of people are out of their winner’s pool with that game.

I’m not quite sure why the NFL had 6 teams on bye week this week.  They’ll do that again in week 9 I believe.  Why would you have any more than 4 teams on bye?  That’s 8 weeks of bye weeks.. just like it’s been.  To have some weeks with 6 teams, and others with 2 teams, doesn’t make any sense AND it causes fantasy havoc.  It’s a good test for us fantasy GMs.  My team wasn’t really impacted this week, but will be in week 9.

Speaking about fantasy, it was brother vs brother this week in the Samra Sports League.  So I started Cousins this week… and yeah, he screwed me again.  It all came down to Monday Night Football.  I was up 7 points.  I had Jamaal Charles and he had Gronk.  My newly acquired RB made his first appearance in my starting lineup, and he carried me to victory with 3 TDs.  I needed this win.  I’m 2-2 now, and sitting in 4th place.

Some other random thoughts…  are the Cowboys for real this time?  Probably not.  How about Philly?  Probably not.  I still think one team is coming out of the NFC East, with probably a 9-7 record.  How about the Lions?  Again, I can’t see them sustaining this lead in the NFC North.

It’s interesting to see how teams have started, and after 4 weeks in the books, we should have a pretty good idea of where teams are going.  Honestly, except for a few good and bad teams, the rest of the league is still a toss up.  I don’t think 4 weeks is a good enough indicator yet.  After the halfway point, I think we’ll have a much better idea.

That goes for our Bears too.  I predicted a 2-2 start for them, and that’s exactly where they’re at.  I also predicted them to finish 11-5.  It seems like a long shot after this week’s ass kicking, but anything can and does happen in the NFL.  One quarter of the way in is NOT enough to make our decision yet.  These next 4 weeks will make or break a lot of teams, including the Bears.  I have them going 3-1 the rest of the way to the bye week.  I think we’d all be very happy with a 5-3 record at the midway point.  At least we don’t play the Pack again until after the bye week… directly after the bye week.  Week 10 on Sunday night in Lambeau… I hope we can serve up some revenge then…
