April 26, 2025: Leaving San Francisco

Vacation is over. Got off the plane at O’Hare about 9pm on Saturday evening; took a taxi home… yes, a taxi! Probably the only time we take taxis; they’re right outside the airport waiting… easy button. May be a few extra bucks than an Uber, but at this point, we just want to get home. We took a handful of Ubers in San Fran; that was fun. The one guy came about an inch away from hitting this guy; I was sitting in the front seat. He was hilarious; we were BSing the whole ride. He was from England. After he almost hit this guy that cut him off, he started wagging his finger at him; I loved it. I guess my wife didn’t… giving him a low rating for the car smelling like an ashtray; come on… he was great. We always order pizza when we get back from vacation, enjoying one of the best parts of Chicago the minute we step back in the house. It was good.

We did have pizza in San Fran, that really thin type pizza, that is cooked in like 5 minutes; they were making the pizzas right in front of us, since we were sitting at the counter. Don’t get me wrong; the pizza was tasty, but… nothing beats Chicago pizza. And no, I’m not talking about deep dish, which I love btw, but just the plain old thin crust we enjoy every week; it cannot be beat. I do like San Francisco; I was almost going to say love. I love New York. I love Vegas. I guess Frisco would come in after those two cities, ahead of LA for sure. Yes, I lived in LA; I enjoyed it, but… San Fran is more how I like it; it’s a big city, reminding me of New York, reminding me of sweet home Chicago. The weather wasn’t very warm; we had to wear hoodies and/or light jackets throughout, but that was all good. I love hoodies. I think my son really liked the cable car rides. Damn right we got our money’s worth out of those day passes. He really seemed to like standing up, hanging off the side of the cable car as we rumbled down the road; I like that too.

You know, like any big city, San Fran gets a bad rap, kind of like my home. The national news about these places is certainly a bit different than reality. Does Chicago have crime? Yes. Do you have to fear for your life here? No. Does San Fran have a homeless problem? There are many, but it wasn’t so much to worry about, you know what I mean? Sure, we didn’t go to the epicenter of the problem, at 6th and Market per one of our Uber drivers, but we saw some folks wandering around. Every big city has its issues, but in general, they are awesome; I really believe that. Do you have to be aware? Yes, yes you do. There is so much to love about the big city. Specifically in Frisco, how about the up and down streets? Wow! They were crazy, even more so than I remembered from my first visit. It was a workout, but that’s cool; all that walking balanced out all that food I ate, sort of. Now, it’s time for the slow entry back to reality; thankfully, my reality is not too shabby.
