I swear I was just writing about Thibs the other day… You see for me, I’ll always love him and what he did here in Chicago with the Bulls. Of course we had Phil and MJ, you know, the dynasty… may have heard of them. But after that… Sure, before that you had Johnny Red Kerr and the Bulls of Sloan, Van Lier, Love, Walker, etc… the Bulls did do their thing before the “cocaine cowboys” of the early 80s rolled in, prior to Mike getting drafted. But back to after the dynasty… we got one real one… that was Thibs and those guys; man I loved that team. One of my biggest Chicago sports disappointments is seeing them not win #7…
The Bulls made the playoffs every single year under Thibs… and we fired him. Since then…the combination of Hoiberg, Boylen, and Donovan… the past 10 years… have been an absolute complete joke, that continues to this day, with Billy still at the helm; what kind of dirt does he have on the Reinsdorfs? Oh yeah, they’re checked out, and fine with living that “play-in life”… 2 playoff appearances in 10 years, both first round eliminations. Seeing Thibs shown the door pissed me off, and if you haven’t noticed, it still does. The whole state of the Bulls piss me off, but we’re not going down that rabbit hole right this second. Back to Thibs…
Now we have another team making the same boneheaded move; Thibs was fired on Tuesday as coach of the New York Knicks. I swear… these people that are the decision makers. I could see it though, living in the corporate world like I do. Firing somebody just because, with no future plans, no worry about what you just let walk out that door, not thinking about everything that had been accomplished, how much better things are than when they first arrived… and now, how much worse things will be. You know, the people working for that person that was fired for whatever reason, those people, in this case, those players that loved that dude… I’m sure not everybody did; there are those soft dudes out there. But if you liked to work, you committed yourself to the craft, you knew you were getting back the same and then some. Those Bulls of Thibs… DRose, Noah, Deng, Taj, Butler… ask them how they feel about Tom. Now you’ll be able to ask Brunson, Hart, Robinson…
The Knicks are coming off an Eastern Conference Finals, which is actually better than the year the Bulls had before Thibs was fired; we were coming off an Eastern Conference Semi appearance. Still… I don’t get it, but maybe I do. Thibs ain’t bowing to anyone; he knows what he brings to the table. The results are there for you to see. He’s not worried about what anybody thinks. Thus, the people that aren’t like that, those calling the shots, don’t like that… and eventually, he wears out his welcome… The reason will be because he plays his starters too many minutes… but we know what’s up for real. Thibs will be OK; I’d love him back here in a heartbeat, but that ain’t happening. Wherever he goes… personally I think he could take over a big college program and be just fine until retirement… the NBA has turned soft in general… not Thibs’ cup of tea. The Knicks on the other hand, well… hopefully they do better than Hoiberg then Boylen… Dumb asses.
