September 20, 2017: A Great Loss

posted in: Cubs | 1

And no, I am not talking about the Cubs losing to the Rays… breaking their 7 game winning streak… ending the dream of finishing the season with 19 wins in a row.  No, that pretty much sucked.  Lester rocked again?  He says it’s not health related; I certainly hope he’s right.  Either way, he’ll need to get it together pretty soon if we want to make the playoffs, and if we want to make any noise if/when we get there.  I’m a bit worried about Jon… just a bit.

No, I’m talking about what took place after the Cubs recorded their L.  It was the result of the Pirates Brewers game that is the reason for the title of this blog:  a great loss.  We’ve been down this road before…

Back in the day, I posted this:  http://www.thelocalsportstalk.com/january-22-2015-the-top-10-losses/.  Basically, it’s the top 10 losses in games not involving Chicago sports teams.  I’m not sure if what happened between the Brewers and Pirates makes that list… at least not yet… but it was sure fun to see it transpire.

After the Cubs lost, I immediately checked the score.  I saw the Brewers were up 4-3; the Pirates had walked in the go ahead run.  Those bastard Pirates… just laying down to the Brew Crew… I know they don’t suck that bad.  The next thing I heard was that there was a guy on 2nd for the Pirates in the bottom of the 8th.  There were 2 outs, and Milwaukee was going to their closer.

Not really that crazy about the new ESPN gamecast, but I guess seeing the score tied up was all I really needed to see.  After the fact, I heard their closer threw the ball down the right field line for the 4-out blown save attempt; priceless.  And wait, it got better…

I missed what Braun did in the top of the 9th with a guy on, but saw that the game had moved to the bottom of the 9th.. still tied at 4.  I turned on MLB network; they are awesome, especially at this time of year.  They of course showed the ending of this game.  Adam Frazier, who was on my fantasy team by the way, cranked a no doubter to right field to end the game.  I was half asleep watching it, and scared the crap out of my wife, when I yelled out “Yeah!” and pumped my fist.  We trimmed the magic number down to 8 through the back door, and it was oh so sweet.

How big will this loss be?  If we win the division by 1 game, it would grow in importance, but maybe it’s already there.  That really had to take the wind out of the Brewers sails heading into the 4 game showdown at Wrigley North with the Cubs.  They had a chance to cut it to 2.5, but thankfully still remain 3.5 games out; nothing another Brewers sweep of the Cubs can’t cure.  I think I just threw up in my mouth.

I’m hoping that the sweep in Wrigley plays in the Cubs favor now.  Remember that boys?  Use it to get that laser focus and kick the crap out of these guys.  Really, a series split is a win for us, but if WE swept the Brewers… we would be celebrating the division on Sunday in Milwaukee.  Now I was thinking about going up there.. but it didn’t really work schedule wise… BUT, if we had the opportunity to clinch… well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

One game at a time is what they say, and that’s how the Cubs have to go about their business.  The return of Jake in Game 1 will be adding to the drama.  But after that devastating loss against the Pirates, how will the Brewers psyche be?  I hope they’re a mess, and I hope we destroy them.  Go Cubs!!!

Cubs snap their streak of 7 wins in a row. Lester with another sub-par performance, but I am not worried. As long as he is healthy and feeling good, he will be fine on the mound. I fully expect a bounce back outing his next time up.
I don’t really like the new espn gamecast, either. I was happy to get your text about the brewcrew blowing that game and keeping the Cubs lead at 3.5. The bucs did their job on this night, at least. Now, the Cubs head to Wrigley north for a 4 game set that could determine the nl central. 3.5 game lead with 10 to play…magic number=8. Cubs need to keep the brewcrew reeling and deliver a 1st game W. Jake will be back on the mound. Send an early message that the nl central is the Cubs! Lower that magic number to 6 and get that much closer!
    GO CUBS GO!!!
