August 6, 2021: The Opposite Game

Yeah, tough weekend ahead for us Cubs fans. We’ve been on this side of the matchup before. There have been plenty of years the Sox have been better than the Cubs, but this time, it’s a little different. This time, the Cubs just dumped their stars and got jack shit in return. Yes, the golden era of Cubs baseball is over. We’re coming into this crosstown series with our wounds wide open, and who better to come along and pour salt in them than the team we share the city name with… The White Sox are one of the best teams in baseball. They march into Wrigley Field looking to pounce on the vulnerable in what can really be called the opposite game.

We couldn’t be more opposite right now. The Cubs, just breaking every window, shutting them on any chance of success. The Sox, window wide open, trying to capitalize on their position. It’s sickening frankly. Honestly, I haven’t had too many White Sox fans try to rub it in. Except for the security guard at work, who has been trying, I haven’t heard much. I know why they’re holding out. Sure, maybe they realize how bad it must suck right now, but… they’re trying to live right… because no matter what you do to build a team on the field, no matter the regular season success, a whole lot of things have to go right to win it all; this is of course the only thing this year that will equal success for the Sox, right? Let’s not talk shit right now. Let’s keep our eyes on the prize. Smart. Well, that’s how I would be thinking if it was the opposite.

Yes, for all the wins thus far, the Sox haven’t won shit thus far. It’s still 2005 or bust on the South Side. Yes, I lived through that. My answer to their shit talking back then was “who will win it next though?” Thankfully, the Cubs made me look good, backing it up, bringing it home in 2016, which last time I checked, was a lot closer to today than 2005. But now, if that same question was asked, I think we can all agree on what that answer would be… well, at least who it should be. Yes, the Sox are in position. They are sitting way out there in first place in a shit division; it’s not their fault. They will be in the playoffs, and the only way you can win a World Series is by making the playoffs. They’re in. They’re probably the only team in the majors that can feel that comfortable about their position. They didn’t sit and do nothing at the deadline either. They added pieces; that’s really, really smart. Because no matter how good you’re doing now, you need to add… add… add whatever you can. Your bullpen is strong; add. You have one of the best closers in baseball; add another. They will be adding in the form of guys coming back from injury too. Eloy is already back; Luis is on the way… maybe in time for this weekend? Timing…

Hey, but at least the Cubs have Kyle on the mound Friday; that gives us a chance. But honestly, and I’d have to look this up to confirm, but it always seems like the worse team of the two win the series; I guess that’s why the Sox have a better overall record. Hoping that turns out true this weekend; it would give us Cubs fans a shot in the arm, at a time when we need it more than ever.

Time to get ready for work. Regardless of it all, I’ll be rocking my Cubs gear today… because as I told my son, I only root for one team. I don’t care if the Sox beat the Cubs 100x in a row, I’m not changing the hat that I wear. Regardless of which bozos are running the Cubs, I will still be a fan… because I was one before they came and I will be one after they leave. Yes, there is only one choice, especially this weekend. It’s Cubs or bust… well, we already busted out, and while the mighty Sox look to kick us when we’re down, maybe, just maybe we can show a little fight. Go Cubs!
