April 20, 2025: Hippity Hop

Easter on 4/20… Hippity Hop. There’s a joke somewhere in there, especially when you factor in the fact that April 20th was also the day Adolf Hitler was born. I’m not a history aficionado by any means, certainly not a fan of Adolf. The only reason I know this is because my son is in the middle of the Anne Frank book, and was doing some research; plus it’s one of his classmates’ birthdays, so… anyways, Easter, 4/20, Hitler’s birthday… mix that all together and you get… Happy Easter?!?!

It was OK. It is the biggest holiday in the Catholic Church; I do love it… not as much as Christmas personally, but yeah, Easter is a really special time. Headed to Church this morning, only to find it packed… completely packed, sold out if you may, on this second part of the “Christ-easters” special. Yeah, many of these people I’ve never seen before, no joke. It was the most crowded I’ve seen the church in many, many years; we didn’t even get a seat. I was kind of mad at this for a minute, but then thought, hey, at least these people came to church today; we stood the whole Mass. This was probably a good thing, considering it was my first Easter without my Mom, considering one of the times I feel closest to her is when I’m in Church. I probably would have just sat there with tears flowing down my face… Standing up in the back of Church, I tried to hold it together. Since I was in the back of Church, I did get to step out for a minute, when I felt the emotions coming on. I walked out on the church steps to get some fresh air; I felt a strong gust of wind. Whenever I feel that, I feel my Mom… Happy Easter Mom. From there it was time to bounce around with family; it was a long day, it was a good day. We didn’t get home until late; thankfully we had pretty much finished packing.

Yes, Monday morning, we would be off. This late Easter lead to a late Spring Break for my son; we were getting out of dodge, stepping out of the matrix, heading West. You see, I have a legit excuse this time for being in catch-up mode. Not a whole lot of Chicago sports stuff to discuss off over the next week or so, but I will definitely weave it in; I almost always do. Will be flying into San Francisco, heading down the coast for a few days, then back to the city for the remainder of the week, before coming back home. I always look forward to getting away, seemingly a lot more than normal nowadays. I do call the grind beautiful, but it’s still a grind at times; it’ll still be there when I get back. For now, time to relax and/or at the very least, have fun. Away we go…

Easter this year felt unusually crowded, with so many unfamiliar faces at church. Standing through the entire Mass was tough, but it kept my emotions in check on my first Easter without Mom. The strong wind outside reminded me of her presence, which was both comforting and bittersweet. Celebrating with family afterward made the day special despite its challenges.

Do you think the unexpected crowd at church was due to Easter’s rare coincidence with 4/20 and its historical associations?
