Back to reality included my son’s 2nd track and field meet of the year on Sunday afternoon. Glad it was in the afternoon, since I slept past 930 in the morning! That never happens, I mean NEVER. Guess it was the late night, with the adjustment back to the time change, or whatever; it felt great. I love to sleep. I know per Nas it’s the cousin of death, but for me, it’s one of my favorite activities; damn I must be getting old.
I’m certainly too old to run around a track in any competitive way like my son does; I don’t think I ever enjoyed that. Walking, speed walking… OK that’s cool, but running? I guess I enjoyed jogging for a while. My son does partially jog for his 1600M race, which is 4 times around the track, approximately a mile. He finished in 4th place, bringing home a medal. He wasn’t feeling 100%; he didn’t even want to go… guess the vacation hangover. He sat out his other individual race, but was definitely there for the relays. The boys finished 5th and 6th in the 4×400 and 4×100 relays, can’t remember which was which. At the end of the day, he came home with 3 more medals to add to the collection; not too bad for somebody not feeling 100%. There’s only one more track meet this year, so even though there was a baseball game at the same time as this track meet, we chose track, the school event. He had missed his first baseball game of the year on Saturday due to us in the air flying back home; his team lost both their first 2 games without him. We’ll finally get to his Opening Day this year later this week. Track though, last meet next Sunday; it’s been fun.
I think he can bring home 4 more medals; he would need to medal in each event he participates in to do that. The team hasn’t won a trophy yet though; that would be a nice way to end the season. The varsity girls actually won 2nd place in this meet; they were very happy. I think they were more happy to learn that their relay time was slightly better than the boys; that boy girl competitive thing is strong with his class. The boys always bragging about their undefeated basketball record… score one for the girls on this day. I think it’s fun, a healthy competition, as long as they’re rooting for each other at the end of the day.
The track meet was an easy way to return to reality; Monday will be the hard part. Back to school, back to work… I typically will log in ahead of time to check stuff out, get a jump start… but not this time. Nope, I’m not checking until Monday morning, my official return to work date; screw that. The emails will still be there. Monday here we come… we can do this, we can do this…
