April 5, 2025: The Next 4000

The next 4,000 begins now. Yes, fresh off a milestone, we don’t skip a beat; let’s keep this thing moving shall we?

Saturday night brought the Final Four, only the 2nd time all four number one seeds have made it that far. For however boring the “madness” has been thus far, surely the Final Four will make up for it, right? Well, they were pretty damn good games, let me tell you. In the first tilt, it was Florida vs Auburn, an SEC reunion, the 2nd time the 2 teams would meet on the year. It went about the same as the first, with the Gators coming out on top. Auburn actually had a decent sized lead heading into the half, but have no fear, the 2nd half team is here! Yes, even my niece who was over for my son’s birthday party knew, the Gators are a great 2nd half team. I should have taken that tidbit and placed a wager on the game, but noooo… I didn’t. Come on… it’s my son’s birthday party and I’m going to be gambling? Are you crazy? I had Houston in the 2nd game plus the points… haha.

The 2nd game was crazier than the first. The Duke Blue Devils looked like they were bound to face Florida in the National Championship Game, until they weren’t. Maybe they thought the same thing? Duke was in control most of the game and then choked it away. OK, you have to give credit to the Cougars for not throwing in the towel, for continuing to play hard, but man… I’d definitely lean on the side of a choke job here. And still, they had a chance to win, with player of the year freshman Cooper Flagg with the ball in his hands, and a mid-range turnaround jumper for the lead… short. You see, everybody can’t be MJ… I’m sure Cooper will go on to do great things in the league, when he decides to go. Does he come back to Duke now for unfinished business? The kid is already making a ton of money; what’s the hurry to go play with the Washington Wizards? Haha… I could see it.

And now, the championship game is set: the Florida Gators vs the Houston Cougars. Of course, the Gators have titles to their name already, the memorable back to back with Joakim Noah, Al Horford, and Corey Brewer, coached by now HOF coach Billy Donovan; that’s kind of crazy… not the fact that team went back to back, but that Billy Donovan is going to the HOF; we’ll get to that later. And then there’s Houston… who has been to more Final Fours than any school (now 7) without winning a title. I wonder who I’ll be rooting for… With my team (Alabama) already dispatched, I’ll certainly be on the side of the team that has never won; you know I’m a sucker for those stories… plus the old coach… would love to see them win one for him. Until Monday night…
