Well, the Cubs finally made their splash in free agency signing Marcus Stroman. First off, I’d love if this was A splash, and not THEIR splash. As I mentioned before, it’s going to take a few solid signings to raise us to a respectable level. Secondly, let’s just take it as it is: this was a solid signing.

Maybe we were all just waiting for something, anything from the Cubs. Everyone was rejoicing after the Cubs finally inked him, like we had just signed Koufax. Relax everybody. Hey, don’t get me wrong; I like the fact that the Cubs signed him. I think Stroman is a fine pitcher. I did think it was funny that someone put him ahead of Kyle Hendricks in the rotation; no fricking way man. However, at this point, he would be 2nd in the pecking order, which honestly, doesn’t make me feel that great either.

Stroman is a number 3 at best in my opinion. Sure, the Cubs didn’t overspend; the contract seems totally reasonable. But maybe that’s because he’s a 500 pitcher!!! I know, I know… wins and losses for starting pitchers don’t matter. But “if they did”, we’re looking at a career 500 pitcher. At 61-60, I don’t think anybody is going to be shaking in the batter’s box facing this guy.

Hey, I don’t want to be a Debbie Downer. I AM happy the Cubs signed somebody of note; certainly Marcus is of more note than Miley, Gomes, and Frazier… although I am a bit interested in how Frazier is going to do. But if THIS was our big splash… well, let me get back to my feeling that the Cubs aren’t going anywhere in 2022. Like Pat says during a close game in the 9th inning, buckle those seat belts Cubs fans… get ready for a rough ride.

But wait, there’s more. Carlos Correa is coming to the Cubs, right? Well, according to reports, the Cubs are involved in those discussions, although that could just be Jed’s nephew dropping a “hot tip”. I know about the whole where there is smoke thing, but sorry if I’m not convinced. However, IF the Cubs did sign Correa, NOW we’re talking. And oh yeah, that STILL wouldn’t be enough. The Cubs better sign another starter at the bare minimum, on top of Stroman and Correa. If the Cubs do that, then maybe I’ll shut up.

In the meantime, yes, I am feeling a little better, but got to tell you Cotton, still not great. My patience will really be tested now, since the MLB has locked out, and there will be no news for a minute. It would have been nice to snag Correa before this happened, but… at least we got somebody. I really do hope Stroman does well on the bump in Wrigley next year, that is, if this lockout is settled in short order and the 2022 season is not impacted. I’m sure it will be, I mean, with the great, respected leader who the current MLB commissioner is, this thing should be over in a matter of days.

Sorry, trying to keep it positive; it usually isn’t this hard, but right now, in my Cubs diehard fan world, I’m still scuffling a bit. I’m glad to see a ray of light… glad that the Cubs added to our rotation, but that’s all it was. I need to see more… more, more!!!!
