Part of the 4th of July weekend this year was going to a ball game. The Cubs were hosting the Cardinals at Wrigley Field, but that’s not where we went. The Sox were in Colorado for an epic matchup between last year’s worst team and this year’s worst team, but we didn’t go there either; I’d love to see a Cubs game in Colorado, but not yet. No, our ballgame was the Chicago Dogs vs the Kane County Cougars in Rosemont; it’s dog time!
We pretty much go once per year; we’ll take one of our nephews with us to hang out with my son. It’s a small stadium; they get to walk around by themselves… I know they like that. This time they brought gloves and were playing catch (and wall ball) behind the left field wall; there are no seats out there, only a walkway. They do have bleachers in right field, but yeah, very small stadium. It’s nice though. Tickets are inexpensive; less than $20 per sitting 7 rows behind the dugout. Concessions are still pricey; I thought I had remembered them to be cheaper. Oh well, have to chuck it up I guess. Had a few drinks, as I basically sat and watched the whole game with my wife, as the boys were bouncing back and forth. This time we didn’t even have to pay for parking; usually it’s a few bucks, but this time, we parked in a different lot, and paid nada. That’ll work. Of course, this game featured fireworks after the game, which were very nice. It was also Elvis night; my wife loves Elvis. We didn’t catch any of the pregame performance, but watched him do a handful of songs after the game was over, after the fireworks; it was fun.
As for the game itself, the Dogs were winning 4-0 I believe; one of their guys hit 2 home runs, and their starter only gave up 1 hit through 6 innings. Then they went to the bullpen… we knew that was going to be bad. You see, my nephew went over to the bullpen the previous inning and asked him for a ball; the guy said no, he’s warming up. OK… well, this guy that was warming up, just brought upon himself some bad karma. He came into the game and promptly gave up 3 runs. The next reliever gave up the 4th run in the 8th inning. This game wouldn’t be settled until extras. They use the same rule as the MLB does, with the runner on 2nd starting in the 10th. The visitors punched in 2 more runs, and the dogs couldn’t only muster up 1 in the bottom, losing 6-5. Tough loss, but it’s not like that was the Cubs… I’d have been a bit more upset.
On this evening, no reason to get upset; it was a beautiful night, and we got to sit around and have some drinks, watching a ball game. Nothing wrong with that, ever. If only this 4th of July weekend could last forever…
