Things move pretty fast around here… you blink and you might miss something. For the sake of this blog, things get busy at work and/or outside of work, and bam… there goes a week. I work hard to stay current, to catch up, to get current again, and keep it that way, but… nope. Here we are, back to catch-up mode. When I get into catch up mode, it’s hard to talk about current events, like the NBA Finals or the Stanley Cup, because, well, both series are well underway; what, am I going to write a preview? I’d be pretty good with those predictions. Even with current day Chicago sports, which nowadays is just baseball; I’m a week behind! Can’t go retro, unless something major happened to comment on. Anyways, this isn’t your problem; it’s mine. I have enough going on inside my head to catch up quickly… What can I write about on June 5th???
Well, it just so happens that when I was thinking about blinking, and missing something, and falling behind on my blog, I thought of the Ferris Bueller movie, which, by the way, is linked to this specific date back in 1985. The movie came out in 1986; who doesn’t love that flick, especially if you’re from Chicago??? Plenty of local spots featured in his day-off antics, including the cathedral itself. Yes, part of his day off is spent at a day game at Wrigley Field watching the Cubs take on the Atlanta Braves; love the old Braves’ unis by the way. And that Cubs game, where he sat down the left field line, not too far from where another famous person sat/incident happened, occurred on June 5, 1985… 40 years ago! Talk about blinking and missing something; holy shit! The summer of 1985.. I had just finished up 3rd grade, and was playing baseball at the park many days. The Cubs were coming off their 1984 miracle run and subsequent choke in the playoffs. The Sox were two years removed from their “winning ugly” year. The Blackhawks had just been bounced from the conference finals by the Edmonton Oilers. The Bulls who had just drafted MJ, lost in the first round of the playoffs to the Milwaukee Bucks. And the Bears… well, they were about to set off on one of the most historic years in NFL history. What a time to be alive in Chicago…
As for the movie, what a classic. Ferris snagged a foul ball in the game and was shown on TV, just as Principal Rooney had turned his back on the TV. The parade downtown, the Art Institute, the beach scene up in Wilmette I believe, the guys joy riding with the convertible, the French restaurant with the sausage king of Chicago… I could go on. It has to be one of the best Chicago movies of all time; Blues Brothers, the Fugitive, Untouchables… a few more that jump to mind. OK, that’ll do for day 1 of catch up mode; let’s see how far I can get.
