June 8, 2025: Summer Swimming

My son is back in the pool after a brief break. Fall swimming starts in the fall (duh) and runs through Spring. After that, there is about a six week break, before Summer swimming starts up. On this particular day, my son swam in his first swim meet of the season.

I absolutely loved, loved, loved this swim meet; want to know why? It’s because it was less than 10 minutes from our house, that’s why! Normally, we’re on the road… to the suburbs, to another state… When you add in the half day swim meet plus the round trip total, yeah, it’s a long day. But this one… 10 minute round trip!!! I can do this every week. My son participated in 4 events, 1 of them for the very first time.

Typically, he swims the 50M individual races; in this meet, the coach signed him up for all 100s. 100M breast stroke, butterfly, and freestyle; I like it. There is a new coach in the house, or should I say pool. He seems really good. He has a plan for practices week in week out. We’ve already met with him to discuss our son and his future. We’re supposed to do a video session where they will record my son swimming, so he can see with his own two eyes potential tweaks he can make to shave some time; it all sounds very promising. I love the fact that he put him in all 100s right out of the gate. My son improved on his 100M freestyle time and his 100M breast stroke time, and… finally registered a time for the 100M butterfly, the first time he swam this event in an official swim meet. The boys took home their relay in the final event for the day. Overall, it was a very good day.

I did have to time all day. I know I said how much I loved this meet because of how close it was to the house, and I do like timing, I do like doing my part, but the entire meet?!?! I chucked it up this time, but definitely will look for some better planning the next time around. Some parents just drop their kids off I think and then leave, or maybe they just hide so they won’t have to chip in; whatever for the most part, but… I’m not going to time for 3 hours?!?! Haha… never satisfied… just couldn’t enjoy the travel time… haha.

Of course, it was fun to see my son out there doing his thing again; that’s always the best part about it. Will my son be taking his swimming to the next level in high school about a year from now? That will mean basketball will have to take a backseat though… We still have time to figure that out. Like my wife said, let’s just focus on getting him into a school before we worry about the sports. OK, I guess she’s right… haha.
