5 walk off hits on Tuesday night in the MLB?!?! How crazy is that? What’s even crazier is that 3 of them were within a few minutes of each other! What’s even crazier? All of these were done by current or ex-Cubs! Yeah, in that Mel Allen TWIB voice, how about that!
OK, so Isaac Paredes was only with us for a cup of coffee; he was one of the culprits. But the other… Javy Baez; you see how he’s doing??? Seeing Javy do well warms my heart, makes me think of the good old days, the Cubs golden years including the 2016 capture of the holy grail. Javy hit a 3 run HR in the bottom of the 10th to win it for the Tigers against the Red Sox in Detroit on Tuesday night. He’s been doing a lot of good things; he’s looking like El Mago again. Playing in CF for the division leading Tigers, Baez has played a big part in their success. I wish nothing but the best for him; maybe we throw it back to 1945 and have a Tigers Cubs World Series? Imagine that.
The current Cubs player that completed this trifecta is a familiar face, but a new Cub, Justin Turner. Of course, any walk off hit is exciting; you can certainly make the argument that a walk off HR is the best. However, I will take a different stance. The double that Justin Turner hit into the left field corner on Tuesday night, scoring Nico from first base with the game winning run, is the best type of walk off. Did you see Nico’s face? He was yelling rounding 2nd base; he knew he was going to score the game winning run. And being there, when you have guys running around the bases, you go crazy; to have this guy rounding the bases representing the game winning run…. priceless; it doesn’t get much better than that IMO.
We’re more than 25% into the season and the Cubs are in first place. Sure, there are still 5 teams in the NL with the same or a better winning percentage than us, and I have documented my disbelief in the ability to maintain this position without some additional roster moves, but first place is first place. We cannot be in better position than that. Yes, we can have more wins, but winning the division is our surest path to the playoffs. Looking at the teams in our division, who are we worried about? The Cardinals have won 9 in a row and are only 1.5 games out; for some reason, they are always in the mix. That would suck to lose the division to them; it would suck to lose the division period. There’s no reason for it, IF the Cubs don’t stop… acquire more, resign guys, etc, etc. The job of the front office is not done yet.
When will I be able to get to Wrigley? My son mentioned the crosstown series this weekend, but… those tickets will be pricey, plus all the drama that comes with those games, unless the Pope has calmed some Sox fans down. The Rockies and Reds will be in for the next homestand; that sounds pretty good. The weather is changing; the Cubs are playing good ball. Time to make some more magic in the cathedral. Go Cubs!
