May 8, 2025: The Pope of Chicago

Is he a Cubs fan? Is he a Sox fan? Of course this would be one of the topics on the day the new pope was chosen. Not only is Pope Leo XIV the first Pope from America, he’s FROM CHICAGO!!! Side note: he took my son’s name…haha. It was a pretty damn good day overall with this news coming down, even though it did turn out that he is a Sox fan; that’s OK… they need him more.

OK, is he really from Chicago? Dolton is technically outside Chicago, so… we going to hold that against him? Haha… Hey, the Chicago rules apply to everybody right? After he was picked, (a huge underdog by the way on the betting markets; we will bet on anything and everything won’t we? haha) Twitter became one of the best places on earth. If you’re not careful, Twitter, like any social media but especially nowadays, can become a depressing wasteland; you have to be an extra good filterer! I think I am, for the most part. But on days like this… I’m drinking from a garden hose. It’s days like this, like when the Packers lose in the playoffs, or when LeBron gets knocked out of the playoffs, when Twitter is the absolute best. The amount of cool, catchy, witty stuff that was put out there about Pope Leo was unlimited. My favorite one may be the person who matched up the video of him coming out for the first time with the Bulls intro song; just fricking amazing. Of course, there’s all the Bears stuff… can’t see enough of that… DAAAA POPE. There’s the cool t-shirt designs that will be available soon. There’s the whole Chicago themed stuff, like Italian Beef, Deep Dish Pizza, Portillos, Malort, Old Style… Chicago to the max today for our new pope. Like I said, I was loving it… I was excited to get home to talk to my “Pope Leo” and congratulate him, but… I think he was getting it from all his classmates already; he was a little tired of it… haha. He came around though. I got text messages from a few people about this too; it was a very cool day.

It’s not ALL good stuff. You hear about allegations linked to our new pope; that’s not good. True, not true… time will tell I guess, but you know the dirt would be dug up; this is the worst scandal related to the Catholic Church… no way around that. For now, let’s just hope it’s not true; still, it won’t stop there; folks will be coming for this new head of the Catholic Church about anything and everything. This is where being from Chicago will come in handy; we don’t have thin skin in this city. I had to run an errand that afternoon, just after he was chosen; I stopped in Church and said a quick prayer for him… he’ll need it; we all need it.

Another good one was the translation of what he was saying… talking about the Packers, or maybe the new stained glass window in Rome with Michael Jordan, or how about the new “Pope Mobile” being a CTA bus… or maybe it took less days for the new pope to be chosen than it did with Shadeur Sanders… I’m telling you, it’s endless… and I couldn’t get enough. At the end of the day, all jokes aside, let’s just hope this new Pope of Chicago helps this world become just a little bit better, God knows we need it.

That’s such a fun read! I love how the excitement around Pope Leo XIV being from Chicago just took over everything, especially social media. It’s so true how Twitter can be both a wild and uplifting place on days like this. The mix of sports, food, and local pride really shows how much Chicago means to people. The t-shirt designs and Bulls intro song mashup sound absolutely brilliant. But I’ve got to ask—do you think the Pope’s Sox fandom will actually influence anything, or is it just a fun fact? Honestly, this whole thing makes me want to visit Chicago even more!
