April 26, 2014: Friday Night Lights

Here I sit at my computer a couple hours after I had already gone to sleep feeling like I’ve just finished a 12 round fight.  I was awakened by my 2 year old son’s crying, probably because his ears were still ringing from me screaming at the TV during the whole Bulls game last night.  I mean, a decision had to be made, when 2 critical playoff games for the Bulls and the Blackhawks were scheduled on the same night & the same time.  I went with the Bulls:  partially because I thought it was a more important game for them, partially because we are Bulls season ticket holders, and partially because that’s what my wife wanted to watch more.  You can figure out what percentage to attach to each.

What a game!  It was so satisfying to see BOTH of our teams shine in the bright lights this Friday night.  The Bulls needed this game, and they got it… but it wasn’t easy.  It was exhausting for a fan.  I went from trying to amnesty Boozer early in the game, to kind of wanting him in there at the end.  I saw a veteran named Mike Dunleavy that we acquired to help get us over the edge this year (back when Rose was healthy and we had Deng), have a career game.  I wanted to get in a fight with some big man named Nene.  I watched Jimmy G hit some HUGE shots after standing up to that previously mentioned Nene (Hey, I know your Brazilian, but this is basketball, not soccer… put your last name on your jersey idiot).  I wanted to ring Tony Snell’s neck; then laughed at Washington as they matched that ridiculously stupid play, as I was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief.  Whew!

This Bulls team is really easy to root for.  They represent Chicago well.  They’re a hard working, overachieving NBA basketball team that actually plays hard every night and actually knows how to play basketball together.  This is not easy to find in today’s NBA, which is why I don’t watch much of the NBA besides the Bulls.  I knew they would not go out like that (We ain’t going out like that, we ain’t going out like that, we ain’t going out!), and let the Wizards (the Wizards!?!) go up 3-0.  The Wiz kids have played well, but this Bulls team is battle tested.  They have been through the ringer these past couple years, just like most Bulls fans, enduring multiple injuries to Rose, seeing Deng get traded away (he was a warrior too!), and realizing that this Bulls team will never get a chance to face the Heat again at 100%.  I thought we could BEAT the Heat at 100%.  We’ll never know, although I look forward to the Bulls fully loaded next year.  But there I go… just like everybody else, discounting THIS Bulls team’s chances.  I will NEVER count them out, and will not believe they are done, until they are done.  Go Bulls! Yeah!

Thank you for winning this game in regulation too.  This allowed me to freely flip the channel over to OT in St. Louis, where one of Chicago’s superheroes “Captain Serious”, slipped one past Miller to put the Hawks up 3-2.  You know Miller was guarding that 5-hole… HA!  Now let’s talk Hawks for just a second.  Here’s another team that is easy to root for… for different reasons.  They have brought that winning feeling back to Chicago.  That feeling we all had during the 85 Bears season, where we knew they were invincible.  That feeling we all had during the Jordan years, when we had the ultimate Ace in the Hole with MJ, and he would never let us down.  This Blackhawks team is championship caliber.  They are a battle-tested team that again, I would never count out until they are out.  They were down in the Nashville game, playing short-handed, getting ready to head back to Nashville for Game 6 down 3-2… Hawks win.  Detroit leads series 3-1, Hawks come back and win.  St. Louis goes up 2-0, bring it on!  With 2 cups in 4 years, and trying to go back-to-back this year, this team is great, no doubt.  If they can win it this year, dare I say, dynasty?  With the core of this team locked up, there could definitely be some more Cups in the near future.  Go Hawks! Yeah!

Well, there are just some nights that it is truly rewarding being a fan.  Tonight was one of those nights, where all the pain, all the ups and downs, all the tough losses are washed away for a night, and we can stand in our glory as our teams, OUR TEAMS, shined brightest in the Friday Night Lights.
