April 28, 2014: Split Decision

posted in: Blackhawks, Bulls | 0

This Sunday had both our Bulls and Hawks looking for playoff victories.  This time, at least the games were scheduled to start 2 hours apart, which would allow me to see most of both games.  However, I had to attend my niece’s 5 year-old birthday party which started at 12pm… the same start time as the Bulls game.  What does one do when it comes to playoff games matched up with family functions?  I’ll tell you what I did… missed most of both games.  This is not an easy thing to do.  When the smoke cleared, we had a split decision.

My first glimpse of the Bulls game was at the end of the first quarter, and they were already down double digits.  By the time I was ready to sit down and actually watch some of the game, they were down by 20 in the 4th quarter.  As I sat and watched the rest of the 4th quarter, I wondered what the hell happened!  As the Bulls pulled within 8 points with about 2 minutes to go, I thought, if I was watching it all along we would have been winning.  Then, it doesn’t matter that I missed most of the game, I’m going to see this comeback win.  Well, the first statement is what us true fans do a lot of times…  we hold ourselves personally accountable for our teams’ performance.  It’s kind of like when my buddy who is a big Raiders fan moves from side to side on his couch depending on how the team is playing.  Let me tell you, after the past decade, he might as well throw that couch out.  The second statement unfortunately did not come true.  The Bulls DID pull within single digits, but fell short in the end.  As I watched highlights later in the evening, I saw Ariza have a career day for the Wizards, which I guess matched Dunleavy’s game 3 performance.  I saw Boozer pickup 4 fouls in one quarter.  I saw Dunleavy get hurt.  I saw the Bulls put to the brink.  I was very disappointed, especially because we couldn’t take advantage of the 1 game suspension rightfully given to the Wizards’ goon Nene.  Now, we ask the Bulls to win 3 straight to come back and win the series.  Impossible?  No.  Improbable.  Yes.  I guess you could say the whole season (last 2 seasons really) have been improbable ones for Los Toros.  My wife and I will be at Game 5 this Tuesday, and I know they will NOT let this team celebrate a series victory on the United Center floor.  If they go down the next game in Washington, OK.  They will WIN game 5… because I will be there!

The second half of the playoff doubleheader had a better outcome.  The Hawks continue to impress.  Down 2-0 to the best team in the West (points wise) all year (minus the last 6 games of the regular season), they storm back to win 4 straight in a series that should have been the Western Conference Finals.  It’s eerie to see the same thing happen to the Blues 2 straight years.  (Boo hoo!  I never feel bad for any team besides my own that go through a tough time or have a losing history.  I am a Cub fan OK.)  At this point, if we weren’t sure, I fully expect the Hawks to proceed through the rest of the Western Conference, and meet the Bruins in the finals for the 2nd straight year.  The core guys:  Toews, Kane, Keith, Seabrook were the top contributors this series (Crawford too!).  For an organization to commit to a group of players like this, and see them produce during the playoffs has got to feel good.  It feels good as a fan watching these guys, some of them who will have their numbers hanging from the rafters when it’s all said and done, perform at such a high level on the biggest stage year in year out.  Keep on keeping on…

Thank you again to the Hawks for ending this series, so that I didn’t have to worry about missing Game 7 while I’m at the Bulls game.  Now, I can focus 100% on Game 5 Tuesday night.  I don’t think we’ll have any other “birthday interference” this postseason, although you always have Mother’s and Father’s Day.  However, I can guarantee you, if one of these teams is playing on Father’s Day, it’s the Finals, and I will NOT miss it!
