August 14, 2014: Bust City

How do you define a bust?  I’m going with guys that will NOT live up to their projected value; guys that are ranked higher than they should be.  These are guys that I’m staying away from come August 28th.

Cam Newton is a guy that is ranked pretty high.  Can you name one Carolina WR?  Don’t they still have Deangelo and Stewart in the backfield?  OK, so Greg Olsen is a pretty good tight end.  For that matter, I’ll pass on this entire Panther team.  How about Nick Foles?  You think he’s going to repeat last year with all those TDs and only 2 picks?  As a matter of fact, didn’t he throw 2 picks in less than 1 quarter against the Bears in the 1st preseason game?  Letting Desean Jackson walk may not be that big of a deal, but maybe the NFL defenses catch up to Chip Kelly and this Philly offense.  There are other worthy players on this offense to take, but no Foles for me.  Do I dare say Peyton Manning will be a bust?  No, although his price tag will be SO high coming off last year, especially in our QB friendly league (1 pt every 10 yards vs 25 yards), that I will have to stay away from him.  Maybe Tom Brady fits the bust tag, although you’ll be able to scoop him up for a lot cheaper… he may actually be under valued at this point.  I’ve never been a big fan of taking QBs early, and now this year in the auction, will try to steer away from spending big dough on one.  There are plenty of guys to take that are more than adequate not mentioned here.

At RB, there are some top tier names that will be worth every penny barring injury.  Of the top 4 backs, all of them have missed time with injuries lately, with Charles and Peterson having major injuries.  You have to have a little luck dodging the injury bullet, although everybody usually gets a taste of that.  As long as it happens early enough in the season, I’m OK with it.  Just don’t hit me with an injury at the start of the playoffs… or better yet, during the playoffs.  Yeah, remember the game Tony Romo got hurt after the first series vs Philly a few years back?  It cost me the fantasy title; something I’ll never forget, and reason enough to never draft that a-hole again.  Ok, back to running backs…  I hope Eddie Lacy is a bust.  I hate everything Packer, and would like to list their entire roster on this bust list, but most likely you’ll be safe with any of them.  If Shea McClellin can make one tackle this year…  Marshawn Lynch is a bust guy for me.  I don’t like Seattle in general, and will be avoiding most of their roster, but Marshawn will probably getting plenty of dollars thrown his way… too rich for my blood.  CJ Spiller is going to be sharing with Fred Jackson again; I hate platoon systems in the backfield.  How about Doug Martin?  He was boom 2 years ago, and bust last year.  I’m going to throw Ray Rice in the bust category, and not only cause he’s suspended to start the season.  He was horrible last year as it was, and should be when he returns, although you could get him for pretty cheap…

At wideout, I’m busting Randall Cobb.  Yeah, easy target for me because of who he plays for, and I wouldn’t get him for $1, but based on his injury history, and how discount double check boy spreads the ball around, Cobb will be overpriced.  Cordarrelle Patterson is another.  A nice sleeper last year isn’t going to sneak up on anybody with the hype he is getting.  Rookie QB throwing to him plus overhype equals pass.  How about rookies Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans?  I usually like to grab a rookie or two, but these guys will probably get too expensive.  Playing on Buffalo with EJ Manuel, and in Tampa with no-deep-ball-throwing Josh McCown, will not help their cases.  Finally, the WRs out west, Crabtree and Harvin are 2 guys I’m steering clear of, although if I had to choose one, I’m picking the guy without the migraine headache problem.

With the tight end position, I’m throwing out Gronk’s name, simply because he will garner a high price tag.  Will this guy continue to be injury plagued?  Are you willing to spend $30-$40 to find out?  Vernon Davis is another guy that frustrates me.  I don’t like guys who are inconsistent.  Finally, what about Jordan Cameron?  He was a nice sleeper last year… for a while.  If Johnny Football is throwing to him, doesn’t that hurt his value?

I think I’ll take step back from the fantasy talk for now.  I’ve thrown a lot of ideas and names at you…  Although some may be skeptical about my honesty in these blogs, I will still be writing a few more.  They’re right that I will not be showing all my cards, but the truth is, I have a lot of cards.  I can take my draft 20 different ways, since my number one piece of advice is BE FLEXIBLE.  There are sleeper AND bust guys that for the right price may be on my team.  No matter what you think about a guy, you need to think about that $25 guy sitting at $12 with time ticking down; are you simply going to let him go?  We’ll be back soon with some more fantasy nuggets as draft day approaches.

Calling any Packer a fantasy bust is silly. I love The Bear, but Rodgers, Cobb, Nelson, and Lacy are straight cash homie. Rank of importance in life: family and close friends, thing that make me money, everything else. Being a Bear fan is in the third category, owning a player who scores points, regardless of their team, goes in the second. I’ll take ’em…

Being a fan ranks 2nd in my pecking order… having a packer make me money would feel like I stole money out of the collection basket at church. That being said, Randall Cobb is NOT a top 10 WR like he’s being pushed, and that’s why he resides in Bust City.

As the guy who’s ran those leagues some 20 years ago, and kicked ass just about every year, ill be happy you pass on Nelson and Cobb, and gladly take them on my team. Straight Cash Homie.

I’d love to see you spend your money on guys I don’t want… gives me better chance at the guys I do want.
