August 22, 2017: New Year

I like the text message that my brother in law sent me this year:  Remember, a birthday is like a personal new year.  I’m buying that all day every day.  So, besides January 1st, for me, August 22nd is the start of my new year.

And like a New Year, we celebrate, we reflect back, we look ahead, and we celebrate some more.  It was a pretty low key birthday:  no vacations, no Cubs games, no big party like last year’s 4-0.  It was a nice Saturday afternoon/early evening with my wife.  It was my son’s first day of kindergarten on this Tuesday.  It was an evening at my parents’ house on the day of, which is also their anniversary.  It was a great birthday.

There are a lot of things we can talk about as we reflect about the past, like not understanding how so many people voted for the idiot we have in office today.  But with that, and everything, personal or otherwise, it’s important to learn a lesson.  There’s no going back and changing things, unless we’re watching Back to the Future.  What’s done is done.  If it is a regret, a mistake, it’s important to learn from it, and try to do better next time.  We are not perfect people.  Same thing goes with our sports teams…

We’re still riding the Cubs title wave (get it, tidal wave).  It’s been a phenomenal year for them, and for us Cubs fans.  That was one of the rides of my life, and we’re still on it.  No, no, no… it’s not over yet.  Yes, it hasn’t been as easy, but the top of the NL Central still shows the Cubs, and that’s the easiest way to get into the 2nd season.  Any regrets?  Letting Fowler go?  He hasn’t been that great anyways.  Chapman?  He certainly looks worn down from last year’s postseason.  Trading for Justin Wilson?  He has been bad so far; hoping for better things there.  Don’t know.  I really like all the things the Cubs have done; trusting in Theo & Joe is very easy for me after the title.

As far as the Sox go, it’s been a great rebuilding year for them.  Besides not getting enough for Sale, in my personal opinion…(have you seen his numbers?!?), the rebuild is in full swing.  The team has showed some guts on the field, and as long as the young talent progresses along, and some of that talent turns into stars, the future looks bright there.

The Bears… oh man…  another horrible year, the departure of Cutler, the signing of Glennon, the draft day trade for Trubisky, and now, the QB controversy that everyone wants to deny.  I’m more excited about this season for the simple fact that #6 is gone.

The Blackhawks had another great regular season, but a rough ride out of the playoffs.  Hammer is gone, so is Bread Man; Saad is back.  How much of a window remains for this team?

And the Bulls… I don’t want to ruin my birthday.

Looking back is OK, but looking ahead is better.  That’s what is in our control.  How can we be better, is what everyone should ask themselves.  It’s the question that each of our teams should be looking to answer.  Unfortunately, besides not being able to change the past, nobody owns a crystal ball either.  That’s OK, because the future is NOW.  OK, in 1 minute, 30 minutes, 6 hours, 1 week.  There is no better time to do something about it than now.  No need to wait for new year’s or a birthday.  Any day is a good day to start anew.  The fact that you’re reading this is a good thing; you woke up this morning!  Now what?  Good luck to us all.

Riding the Cubbie blue train continues and always will. How long will this run of winning last? Will it be a 3rd straight postseason with a title defense coming? The Cubs remain in 1st and hopefully will the rest of the summer. No regrets as far as dex and chappy go. Wilson has been bad but can change that when it matters most. Miggy being gone may have brought out the best in Willson, plus the Cubs got Avila, who has been more than serviceable since Willson has gone down. I think the Theo has put the pieces together again. Joe has to match them up, and the players need to do their jobs. We have been here before but this year is a whole lot closer…so far.
The sox rebuild seems to be going well. A lot of young guys playing and getting some good experience. Will it all pay off? The sox faithful hope so…and soon.
The Bears got rid of the cancerous Jay and have a hopeful franchise qb in MTru. Will he play? Will the Bears be better? Do they have a shot at the playoffs this year? A lot of questions with answers to come.
The Bhawks got swept out of the playoffs this year and made moves to make things better next year…hopefully. Will old pieces of the puzzle, like sharp and saad, fit in again? The Bhawks can make it 4 Cups in 9 years next year…how cool would that be?
The Bulls? Yeah, why ruin things…hahaha.
