August 29, 2014: Auction Reloaded

So draft day came and went; I’m pretty happy.

The top 2 QBs came out first with Rodgers and Manning, who went for $45 & $50 respectively.  I thought both of those prices were reasonable.  Then came the first RB nominated: one that was sure to get a lot of money in a Chicago draft.  Matt Forte got $59, as I paid birthday homage to Drinkin Fortes, and filled my first spot.  He was my target, and was going to be mine for anything under $60.  Only 2 guys made the $60 club:  McCoy at $62 & Lacy at $60.  I was wondering if we would see a $70 player, and we ended up only seeing two $60 players.  Everyone was keeping their spending in check.

So my plan was to spend $125 on my top 3 guys.  After spending $45 on Julio Jones, I had $21 left for a RB2 or WR2.  I got the first non-kicker in the draft to go for UNDER $30.  $26 for Andre Johnson put me $5 over my budget early, but I got the 3 guys that I targeted.  I wasn’t worried about that $5.

Some interesting picks included Marshawn Lynch at $42, Gronk at $28, and Le’Veon Bell at $27; all pretty good value picks.  My next pick may be a value pick too; I got someone that was NOT on my list.  For $18, I got Jay Cutler.  I really did not want him, but now I got him.  My QB target was RG3, who I got for $10.  So with two #1 QBs for $28, I may be happier about this than I am now.  With the unplanned $18 on Cutler, it limited me down the stretch, as I missed out on some mid-low tier guys I wanted.  Only time will tell how this works out, but I’ll tell you what, I’m rolling with Cutler week 1 at home against Buffalo.

I scored 3 guys within 5 picks with Sankey at $10, RG3, and Pitta at $9; all 3 of which were on my list.  When I scored Reggie Wayne at $14, I was down to almost exclusively $1 players the rest of the way out.  I didn’t want to pay that much for Wayne, but I wanted him… bad.

Here’s the rundown of the rest of my $1 guys:  Andre Williams ($2), Markus Wheaton (very happy about this), Ladarius Green (yes!), Roy Helu, Andrew Hawkins, Chicago D (of course), James White (hoping Ridlay gets cut), and Greg Zuerlein (I really didn’t want a kicker).  The guys I missed out on that I wanted were MJD, Chris Johnson, Bernard Pierce, and Ahmad Bradshaw.  For this reason, I’m in a shaky state at the RB position.  I’m very happy about Forte, but I may not have another starting RB currently on my roster.  Trade talks may be coming soon…

So 7 of the 12 guys in the league made it out to Dave & Busters for our live draft.  I’m not sure why anyone would NOT want to be there in person, for this best day of the fantasy season.  This is our 3rd year in a row doing the draft in person; I want to push for all of our fantasy leagues to do this, as well as, amp up the football draft.  Reading Fantasy Life by Matthew Berry has given me a lot of ideas for our league.  I will be passing this on to the commissioner, and any other league members, to read after I’m done.  Our league is fun, but we could take it to the next level with some changes.  Reading all the crazy stories in this book makes me feel good about being so crazy about this fantasy stuff; there are others out there like us!  Our league has enough of these type of guys where we could turn it up a notch.

Until then, the season begins next week.  My 1st place guarantee is on the line with only 1 starting RB.  How will I address this?  Maybe I won’t have to.  The key is patience; don’t drop somebody too early.  You have to give it at least 3 weeks until you do something… most of the time.  My door is always open for trades regardless of who or time of season.  I will be trying to wheel and deal this year again, as this is what makes it more fun.  We’ll talk about trades in more detail later in the year.

For now, back to Chicago sports.  However, we will dedicate one day a week to summarize the fantasy week that was, and to look ahead to the next week.  We’ll talk about league happenings, including waiver acquisitions, trades, and any classic matchups.  Football is almost here.  I can’t wait.
