December 16, 2017: Machado Man

Manny Machado is available.  That’s the word on the streets.  Wow, how do you let a player like that go?

If I’m Baltimore, I’m paying him whatever he wants.  In the last year of his current deal, he’s about to cash in, and rightfully so.   This guy is a legit stud.  He can do it all, both offensively and defensively.   He plays hard.  Yes, he did get hurt a few years back when he overextended at first base; that was ugly.  That was a one time deal; I don’t believe he has any other history or injury concerns.  He’s a guy you build a team around.  He’s a guy you don’t ever let go.  The fact that he’s available is exciting.

Yeah, I’ve drafted him many times in fantasy baseball.  He’s been a big part of my success there.  If I were building a super team, there would be a spot on that roster for Manny.  Man would he look great in a Cubs uniform, but that’s not going to happen.

The front runners are said to be the Cardinals and White Sox; it figures.  A player that I like a lot may end up on a team that I hate.  They already landed Ozuna in a pretty good deal.  They need to try to keep up with the Cubs any way they can.  But who really wants to play under Matheny with the Cardinals; Stanton didn’t.  Then there’s the other option right here on the south side.   That would be a huge get for the Sox.  The only thing I’d be concerned about, as any team, would be the resigning of Machado.  Like the Sox for example, would you want to give up a ton to get a guy you’re only going to have for one year.  If he agrees to a trade and sign, then all good.

Then I started thinking about the Cubs and Machado again.  Could it be possible?  Then I read a really good article by Jesse Rogers who laid it all out.  Trade Russell plus a prospect or two for him.  The Cubs lineup is awesome.  If he resigns, great.  If he doesn’t, move Baez over and go after Harper.   It sounds pretty good.

Going through the position players that I would trade first on the Cubs, Addy would be towards the top.  I don’t want to trade him, I’m just saying.  You need to be prepared for things, such as an opportunity like this.   Obviously Heyward sits atop the list of position players I’d trade, but after him it has to be Russell.  Definitely him before Baez and Schwarber; you can argue Almora, but I really think he could be something.  So in this situation, where Machado wants to play SS, and who wouldn’t want to play with the Cubs in Wrigley with the team and future we have, Russell becomes available.  Addy is part of the future, but when a guy like Machado comes around, you make sacrifices.  Plus we’d be keeping him away from the Cards.

So what’s it gonna be?  Where will he end up, Machado, Machado Man?  We got to have a Machado Man.

This guy is a serious head case and I would not want him on the CUBS. Any team that does pick him up is in a fight for its life. His on the field antics would give any manager grief as well as several fines for the front office. Just remember Baltimore has given up on him and I am sure that they will not say anything to decrease his value. Buyer beware!

Tough call here but I say that the Cubs should let it pass. He would only be guaranteed for this year and would want a monster contract beyond that. Is he worth it? Maybe. He is only 25 but a move to short stop would hurt the Cubs defensively assuming they would have to give up Addy. Addy had a down year in 2017, but I think he will bounce back in 2018. The kid is young, has power, can drive in runs, and is a vacuum at short. My lean for the Cubs is to pass on machado. I would not trade for him just so the red turds don’t get him, either. Maybe the sox have what it takes, but they would have to trade and sign long-term. I just don’t think it makes sense for the Cubs to go after, especially if it means losing Addy or Baez. GO CUBS GO!!!
