February 2, 2018: Not Acceptable

posted in: Blackhawks | 2

A trip to Vancouver… playing the lowly Canucks… a playoff spot 4 points out of reach… on a 3 game point streak… It was all setup for the Hawks to keep the good vibrations going, but they flopped.  That’s not acceptable.

It’s kind of hard to blame Forsberg for this one.  The first Vancouver goal was off a turnover, which lead to a 2-1.  Now, maaaybe you can put this one on Forsberg.  You have to be concerned with the guy with the puck.  He never passed it.  He blew it by him.  Game tied 1-1.

The Schmaltz goal that put us on the board was a beauty.  Nick is definitely part of the long term future for the Blackhawks.  He’s got some serious speed, and it was on display in the game’s opening goal.  Nice little pass from Saad, who himself has been struggling big time, lead to Nick sliding it 5 hole, and an early lead.

Back to Forsberg… the next 2 goals, which gave the Canucks a 2 goal lead, were both deflections right in front of the net.  Is that on Forsberg?  Should he be clearing out his kitchen?  If the first one wasn’t bad enough, the second one was a complete joke.  Sedin was camped out… his goal was a deflection he probably could do in his sleep… it was that easy… it was that uncontested.  I can’t understand how these guys can just camp out in front, and nobody is doing anything about it.  Somebody clean their damn clocks…

That put the Hawks behind the 8 ball in the 3rd period, and then… THEN they started playing with some more urgency.  It was good to see.  It lead to a goal that cut the lead in half.  It wasn’t enough.  It’s NOT enough to play with urgency when you believe the situation calls for it.  The Hawks need to be playing with urgency for 60 minutes.

We’ve seen this before, but the Hawks were good enough to overcome it… not so much this year.  There are 4 lines.  The reason for that is so that these guys don’t get tired out.  So, when they’re out there… each line should be giving it 110%.  Vinnie has had the most energy lately of any Hawks player.  You just don’t see it enough in my opinion.  Is that what this season is boiling down to?

After the Hawks went down 3-1, the game was actually a lot better to watch.  Where was that in the earlier periods?  Where was that push?  They finally got there, but it was too late.  A late goal by the Canucks sealed it.  Thanks Seabrook for that one.. that’s 100% on him… that’s not the first goal we could blame on him this year, but it’s not just Brent.

It’s everybody.  And if each and every player doesn’t understand the urgency of this situation… the possibility of not making the playoffs for the first time in 10 years… now 5 points out of a playoff spot… then something has got to give.  I would never think calling for Q’s head would be appropriate, but… what would be the move?

Maybe we won’t have to worry about it.  Maybe the Hawks will make the playoffs, and maybe they’ll make a nice run.  All will then be forgotten.  But that’s seeming like less and less of a possibility as the season rolls on.  They’re just not consistent enough, period.  They’re fun to watch when they’re pushing it, and frustrating as hell to watch when they seem to be sleepwalking.  Can we please see some urgency… for 60 minutes… every game?  Am I asking too much?  Go Hawks!

I don’t have a problem calling for Q’s head. And/or the rest of the coaching staff as well. We need to shake things up, and not just make line changes and call it quits. The ‘D’ has been a lot more ‘miss’ than hit and miss. The ‘un-power play’ is another HUGE sticking point. Good lord, shoot the f’n puck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Defend the zone, shoot the puck…start with basics, and try to get them right, then move forward from there.

More and more, it just seems that the Bhawks do not want it bad enough. I think there are some that believe they are gonna flip the switch and make the playoffs. Maybe they will but then again, maybe they wont. I think you hit it on the head about the urgency. It is not there for 60 minutes. They get down and sure enough, the urgency appers. That is not acceptable. Not when they are fighting for their playoff lives. Another thing that continues to be unacceptable is allowing guys to camp out in front of forsberg or glass. It makes no sense. Easy deflections and rebound opportunities. This cannot be the defensive scheme can it? I mean, put somebody on their ass! Move em around, get them uncomfortable. WOW! I just cant believe all the times I see it happen. Consistency is non-existant. 10 straight years in the playoffs has spoiled us, but the Hawks play is not acceptable right now! GO HAWKS!!!
