Back in the UC on Wednesday night, to watch the Blackhawks take on the Senators.  If I had only waited to buy these tickets… probably would have saved some dough and/or had better seats.  Oh well… who would have been able to predict them losing 9 out of 10, and 13 out of the last 16 games?  Not I; I’m not that smart.

I did predict what would happen in this one… well, sort of.  I was with my dad and brother, and I asked, what’s the ideal outcome of this game.  My dad said 27-0 Blackhawks; that would have had to be some sort of record, no?  My brother and I both said tie score to OT to shootout for Hawks win.  I said 5-5, he said 6-6; we were both wrong on the score, but right on how this game would finish.  The Hawks had just enough to get past the Senators for a 3-2 win in the shootout.

Watching the first period, the difference in talent between both teams seemed notable.  Yet, by the start of the 3rd period and OT, it looked like that had flipped around.  I guess like anything, it’s about who wants it more.  To make it to this level of play, you have to be talented.  As long as your team isn’t totally out-talented on the ice, the will to win will determine the majority of games.  I have to question this quality for this year’s Blackhawks.

Trying to put a finger on what exactly went wrong this year is tough.  You need a big finger, and probably two hands worth.  But for me, when I look at the talent on the ice, and yes, some of that talent is aging, but on the flip side, there is a bunch of young guns too.  I just don’t think the want is there all the time.  That’s bad to say, because that’s a shot at how hard they play, and that’s embarrassing.

Do you “play your hardest” all the time?  Maybe it’s tough to maintain that level of focus, that level of drive, throughout the year at your job.  You also probably aren’t getting paid millions, but that’s not the point, I don’t think.  Consistently performing at a high level is not easy, yet there are good periods of time when I think I do personally.  I have my down times, but for the most part, try to push through and get it done.  The Hawks haven’t been getting it done.

This is strange for us to see, understanding we’ve been in the postseason 10 straight years, and oh yeah, there are those 3 Cups too…  Pretty damn good run if it truly is ending.  Remembering that makes me a little less angry about the whole thing.  Has any other team in the history of Chicago sports, outside MJs Bulls, delivered a run like this?  The answer is no.  So, we must remember this, and cherish it, and be very appreciative that we were able to experience it.

But like I mentioned before, those days of making the playoffs being a slam dunk, and the certainty of a long run into the postseason being a 50/50 proposition may be gone.  Or, maybe it’s just a 1 year hiatus from postseason play.  Whatever it is, we’ll have plenty of time to talk about it.  I’m very happy they sneaked by on Wednesday night for the selfish fact that we were in attendance.  If that’s what it will take, then I will step my game up, and go to every Hawks game… because winning every game from here on out is our only chance.  Go Hawks!

Always good to be at the UC to watch the Hawks play. Even better when they get the W, which they did in shootout fashion. It did seem obvious early that the Hawks were the better team, but things don’t always work out they way they seem. Maybe that is the hardest thing to come to grips with regarding the Hawks. It isn’t that they will break their 10 year playoff streak. It is that we cannot put a finger on what the problem is, and if we think it relates to playing hard, that is tough to swallow. You always want your teams playing hard, even when the talent and results are not there. Yes, 10 straight years in the playoffs with 3 Cups to show for it can never be taken away or forgotten. Missing the playoffs this year will suck, but so did getting swept in the 1st round last year. The problem now is figuring out what the issue is and fixing it asap! I would much rather miss the playoffs one year, get things fixed, and get back to playing for the Cup than having multiple years in a row with no playoffs. Time for the Hawks brass to make some tough decisions to get things back on track! GO HAWKS!!!
