February 9, 2018: The Old Guard

posted in: Bulls | 1

I was hoping for some more snow prices.  Watching the ticket prices for Friday night’s Timberwolves Bulls game, they did drop down to $35 up in the 300 level, double digit row.  If it was a single digit row, I may have jumped on it then.  I waited, and the prices didn’t get any better than that; they started going the other way.  The snow was about to stop after all.  And oh yeah, it was the return of the Old Guard:  Thibs, Buckets, and Taj were back in the UC.

I’m not going to say the Bulls won that trade; I will say it ended up being more even than I first thought, but… winning the trade?  I love how people are jumping on that bandwagon now.  The Bulls did NOT win that trade.  We gave up a superstar; one, of what recent times tell us, three that you need to win it all.  We traded that ONE and now we have ZERO; ok, I will say we don’t know yet what we have.  Are we ready to roll with the Big 3 of Dunn, Lavine, and Markkanen?  If that is the case, than OK.  But none of those three are at the level of Jimmy Butler.

Zach Lavine must be feeling that.  He played phenomenal on this Friday night game.  It was our best against the T-Wolves best, and at the end of the day, in this one game, the Bulls came out on top.  I wouldn’t feel confident in a 7 game series against the Wolves; I wouldn’t feel confident in a 7 game series against most playoff teams.

It was a nice win, no doubt.  I kind of wanted to see Buckets hit that last shot and stick it to GarPax and Fredberg, even though they were playing nice with the tribute and all.  Plus it would have helped the Bulls continue to streak towards that number one pick.  Was one win worth it?  Probably to GarPax, Fredberg, and everybody else who wants to sell us that the Bulls won that trade.

After seeing them all play, I DO like the players we got back for Jimmy.  Yet, we still don’t really know what they’re going to be.  Dunn has shown some really nice moments, but is inconsistent as hell.  Lavine had maybe a career game in this one; bravo, but can he do this night in night out?  That’s what we had in Butler.  And then there’s Markkanen… he is the big reason why the trade is not so lopsided.  The Bulls made the correct draft pick, or so it seems.  Again, still much more to see of Lauri, but I have no complaints thus far in his rookie season.  Which of these 3 guys are those superstars that you need to win in this league?

I don’t think we can say any of them… at least not yet.  That’s why I cannot say the Bulls won the trade.  Butler IS one of those stars.  I know some people don’t even want to say that, but he is.  Most people think he’s the 2nd star on a championship team; for sure that… I’ll say the #1 star, but either way, he’s ONE of the stars.  We don’t have any right now.

And that’s OK.  According to “the plan”, they will all develop into stars in a couple years.  No need for them to be that good this year with the draft pick on the horizon.  Will that draft pick be one of THE stars on this team?  He better be if we want to keep heading in the right direction.  And if they do, even if one of those three guys can become THE star, then the trade overall will not be as bad.

The jury is still out, period.  There’s no way the Bulls are winning this trade this minute.  If all 3 of them turn out to be THE stars, then talk to me.  Until then, pump those brakes.  Until then, let’s pray that Garpax doesn’t do anything stupid.

Just as the Sox traded Sale, one of the best pitchers in the league, the Bulls traded Butler, one of the best players in the league.  I’m not sure how either home team can win those deals.  The only way to truly win a deal, is to bring a championship home, and the teams that we traded these players to are a lot closer to one of those titles than we are.  Doesn’t mean we can’t get there… patiently waiting for better play AFTER this year and our primo draft pick(s).  Go Bulls!

No way did the Bulls win that trade. Has it become not as bad as previously thought based on what dunn, Markk, and lavine are doing, yes, without a doubt. Can one of them become a star? Possibly but not probably. They may all be good to great players, but I doubt any one of them becomes a superstar. I agree that Buckets is a superstar. He does it all or can do it all on both sides of the ball. The tpups lost the battle vs the Bulls as Lavine played out of his mind down the stretch. Buckets did as well and missed a game winner…would not have minded if that went in. The tpups will win the war as they will make the playoffs with Buckets leading the way. The Bulls will not and should continue plummeting toward the cellar and another top pick. Nice W for the Bulls on this night. Good to see Buckets, Thibs, and Taj back in the UC. GO BULLS!!!
