With Friday’s Bulls matchup against the Lakers, I wanted to take a look back. After the initial memory of our 1st NBA championship coming at the hands of the Lakers, every other memory surrounding the Lakers is crappy. So I decided to make it official. The Los Angeles Lakers are the 32nd installment of the Hate Files.
The true hate of the Lakers will forever be linked to one of the all-time Lakers, Kobe Bryant. I hated him with a passion for a long time… still do. His Lakers… oh wait, Shaq’s Lakers had quite a run… and then Kobe won a couple more without him. All in all, 5 NBA Titles for Kobe came up 1 short of the Bulls run, and for that I was thankful, but that did not really slow down the hate. I remember when it came to an all time high…
It was a bowling outing for work and we were at UIC bowling alley. That same night, it was the Kings Lakers Game 6 back in 2002; that night, one of the refs calling that game was Tim Donaghy. We all know about the Pats and their cheating ways, meanwhile they’re being celebrated for another Super Bowl berth. But don’t forget about good old Timmy… and if you think he was the only ref involved, I have a car I want to sell you. Yes, that game specifically was so brutal… Of course I grew fond of the Kings, hoping they could take down the Lakers… they should have taken down the Lakers, but did not…. thanks to Tim. And the most recent version? They still suck. I hope LeBron runs there next year and they flop face first. This kid Ball and his dad and all the drama they bring. It wouldn’t bother me for one second if the Lakers are never good again.
They may not bring out the hate like they used to, and they may have never reached the heights of those Piston teams or the recent Cavalier teams, but they’re right up there with the Wizards and Warriors in teams that I hate. They officially become the 5th NBA team on this list (I can’t believe I didn’t hammer the Heat yet). Special thanks to Kobe for helping take this franchise to that level of hatred inside my bones. Shame the ‘good’ players were before your time. Jerry West, Elgin Baylor, & Gail Goodrich were the core of some of the early Lakers. If you didn’t like them, it was because they were beating your team.
But I agree with your recent year assessments of them. Shaq was cool, and you can’t dispute Magic’s talent, but I also NEVER like Kobe. Too much ‘I’m the best’ mentality and outward posing. And now, this new kid is following in those same footsteps, ‘cept he ain’t puttin’ up any numbers!

I never really liked anybody from the lakers, from kareem to magic to shaq to michael cooper to rambis to byron scott to vlade to kobe to randle to ball, just to name a few over the years. How about when vlade ran running into magic’s arms after a play against the Bulls in the 91 finals? HAHAHA…enjoy that game 1 victory showtime! Or when magic got “sick” and had to retire? Or him kissing thomas of the bad girls? The feud between shaq and kobe because both egos were too big. That farce of a playoff series vs the kings. Now, the drafting of ball who is overhyped and not that good. I have no doubt that the lakers will do whatever it takes to get back to the top, but whatever it is, I really don’t care. I am enjoying these down years and hope they remain for awhile. The la fakers…blah!
