January 27, 2018: Getting Game Ready

posted in: Blackhawks | 2

Saturday brought the final official practice of the season for the Shark kids.  The real games start next week.  I’m starting to get excited about this whole hockey thing.

Remember, I really didn’t play a lot of hockey growing up… maybe that’s because I didn’t watch a lot of hockey growing up.  For that, I can only thank Dollar Bill Wirtz.  We all know the story of that guy.. the guy that robbed a good number of us of watching the Blackhawks growing up.  I can’t think of many guys’ deaths that brought so much happiness,  but when Dollar Bill bit the big one, his son Rocky took over, and turned the Hawks into the class of the NHL franchises.  Oh yeah, and 3 Cups to Chicago… and oh yeah, brought the universal love of hockey back to the city of Chicago.

The park district my son is playing at appears to have a bit of history in floor hockey, with many championship banners hanging.  We have a ways to go to get into that conversation, but we will officially start our first hockey season next Saturday.

My wife is getting into to it too.  She found some $5 sticks at Five Below; my son was so excited.  The only problem was that when we showed up with our sticks, we were told we couldn’t use them… because they had a wooden shaft, and all the sticks need to be plastic.  Oh well, we can still use them to practice at home, and with the weather being nice Saturday, that’s precisely what we did later that same afternoon.

Our gangway is setup for perfect little battleground.  I brought out the chalk and drew the face off circle, the blue line, and the goalie crease. My son and I started a game, that when I won a puck battle and scored a goal, had a delay.  He’s still working on controlling those 5 year old emotions.  So we drew some more stuff with the chalk, broke out this bubble machine, and hung outside for a while.  We then picked it back up, and played until we couldn’t see any more.  I guess I’ll have to install those lights in the gangway…

Yeah, practice earlier that day was pretty cool too.  I’m learning from the coach also, as far as how he’s teaching the kids to shoot and pass, etc.  My son has picked it all up pretty easily.  As we lined up to take shots towards the end of practice, he found the corner of the net a few times and beat our goalie.

I found out how the league is going to work, meaning, 5 kids on the floor at all time plus the goalie.  2 kids (the defense) will not be able to cross half court, while 2 kids (the offense/wings) have to stay on their side of the floor the whole time.  The center is the only kid that will be able to roam on both sides.  I kind of get the impression that this league, even thought it’s still 4-6 year olds, will be a bit more competitive than the others.  Just a hunch.

We spent Saturday getting game ready, and now the countdown begins.  We jump right in next week with a doubleheader.  I can’t wait.

Floor hockey was great growing up at the Club. Pretty cool that they still play and from what it sounds like, play pretty well at that gym. A competitive 4-6 year old league? HAHAHA, I bet it will be. Fun to be had for sure and hopefully no sticks or pucks to the face. Yard games were the best growing up. Back yard, front yard, gang way…it don’t matter, those are the best! Goodluck with the double header to start the season. Hope my nephew lights the lamp and wins! Go Sharks!
