June 27, 2014: Drafting Deal

posted in: Bulls | 5

So we didn’t have to wait until picks 16 & 19… saved me some time watching the draft.  After pick 11 by the Denver Nuggets was made, a trade was announced, giving the Bulls their pick in return for the Bulls’ two.  Doug McDermott, welcome to Chicago.

Tony Snell, Marquis Teague, Norris Cole, Jimmy Butler, Kevin Seraphin, James Johnson, Taj Gibson, Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, LaMarcus Aldridge, Rodney Carney, Ben Gordon, Kirk Hinrich, Jay Williams, Eddy Curry, Marcus Fizer, Chris Mihm, & Dalibor Bagaric:  all the players selected in the first round by the Bulls since 2000.  You may recognize some of these names; some of these names who still currently reside on the Bulls roster.  It hasn’t been perfect, and there has been some blunders like trading away LaMarcus Aldridge on draft day for Tyrus Thomas & Victor Khryapa, but overall, not bad.  How will McDermott fare?  Only time will tell, but as of right now, I like the pick.

I like the pick because we did NOT need 2 first round picks.  That’s 2 first round guys we would have to sign, vs the 1 we will now lock under contract.  It saves us money for a FA signing.  Whether this helps us boost what we can offer Melo, or helps us land another FA, it provides some flexibility.  I was disappointed that Afflalo was traded earlier in the day; traded to the same team we made our draft day deal with; one guy off the list.  But we still have the opportunity to add someone of value to the roster, along with this rookie.  We all know Thibs loves to play rookies…

So how much playing time DOES Dougie get?  That will be interesting to see, but I would hope he’s in the rotation; a rotation that needs to be more than 6-7 guys this year.  He’s got size at 6’8″.  He’s got some college hardware:  first team All American the last 3 years & national player of the year this past year.  He can score:  leading the NCAA in scoring, while finishing 5th all time in NCAA scoring.  That’s all nice, but that’s all in college.  How will that translate to the pro game?  Will this guy pass the Thibs test?

Well, you would think that’s why they traded for him.  They knew they were getting someone who can have immediate impact.  That’s what the Bulls need after all.  They don’t need someone who can contribute 5 years down the line.  Our championship window is now, and he needs to play a role.

I think Kyle Korver when I see McDermott.  They’re similar size, they’re both shooters, they both went to Creighton.  Does this make me happy or sad?  Well, if it’s the Korver of last year with the Atlanta Hawks, I’d be very happy.  However, this was Kyle’s 12th year in the NBA.  He still only averaged 12 ppg, which was 2nd best for his career.  So, maybe this makes me sad, this comparison.  Let’s hope he’s NOT another Korver… let’s hope he’s NOT another Adam Morrison.  Let’s hope he can make his own mark with the Bulls and in the NBA.  Let’s hope he’s on the good side of the Bulls recent draft day ledger.

With the core of Rose, Noah, Gibson, and Butler all drafted by the Bulls in the first round, the Bulls seem to know what they are doing.  With Snell & Hinrich (hopefully) still on the roster for next year, that’s not too bad of a track record.  McDermott will make 7 current Bulls’ first rounders on their roster.  I wonder how that compares around the league.  There are currently only 2 rounds in the draft; so you’re either taken in the first or second round, so it’s a 50-50 shot that you were a first round pick if you were drafted.  So maybe there are a lot of first rounders on teams’ rosters.  So maybe this isn’t that great.  I’m still satisfied.

I’ll be more satisfied if Rose comes back healthy.  I’ll be more satisfied if McDermott is in Thibs’ rotation.  I’ll be more satisfied adding another FA.  I’ll be more satisfied seeing the Bulls get to the postseason 100% healthy.  The Bulls’ 2014-2015 path has started with this draft day deal.  Let’s hope it ends with a 7th NBA trophy.

Congratulations Bulls! You got yourselves an outstanding young talent. He has had 4 years of college with all of the awards and recognition an individual player could win. Dougie can work in the post or shoot the trey ball. He can handle the rock and bang down low for some boards. Dougie is a great basketball player and an even better man. I should know, I’m his dad and coach. He will fit in very nicely with the team chemistry and will be eager to learn under Coach Thibs! All that was missing in college was a championship, and I think Dougie can help bring that to Chicago. Otherwise, I will kick his skinny, white…

How about some love for USA soccer?!? I know we lost to Germany and backed into the elimination round, but we are down to the final 16 with a good chance of beating the belgium waffles! I personally guarantee a US victory…lock and load!

Sorry Tim, the bulls draft trumps soccer here anyday of the week. That being said, congrats to the US for advancing to the sweet sixteen. If they could win another game, I will be happily surprised. They have looked good…

Great pickup for the Bulls! If McDermott turns out to be as good a shooter as Korver, I’ll be happy. With a healthy DRose (fingers crossed), there will be a lot of open shots for McDermott. All we need him to do is hit 40% of his threes, which he did consistently in college. But, I actually think he can provide more. He’s got a little bit of a post-game and overall high basketball IQ, so I think he’ll make an immediate impact. Now, if we can just get that kid Mirotic to finally come over, or land Carmelo without losing Taj or Jimmy Butler, oh and get a full year out of MVP-DRose, we’ll finally have a complete team that can realistically contend for a title. I know that’s a lot to ask, but we’ve had the shittiest luck the last couple of years…we are due.

Welcome and thanks for the comments. I agree with all of it, except I don’t think it’s too much to ask for. Why can’t we go into a postseason healthy? Getting euro man may not happen this year…and for that sake, melo either. I’ll still take a healthy drose and a lesser FA addition and take our chances. I think keeping the core together is most important!
