March 26, 2018: Offseason

This was the first weekend that went by in a while without a game for my son.  We pretty much went from baseball to basketball to floor hockey, and now, we get a month off before baseball begins again.  What the heck are we going to do?

Ever since that last floor hockey game, he’s been wanting to play every night in our basement.  We have some pretty good games.  He’s learning the backhand, and becoming more aggressive.  I try to rough him up a little bit, to get him ready for any more of that business going forward in any of the sports.  He’s gotten so big, but he still hasn’t had his spurt.  Being 6’2″ and my wife 5’9″, it’s bound to happen eventually.  I’m kind of hoping it happens this year, so he can dominate in the 4-5-6 league.  Turning 6 in about a week, he’ll be among the oldest kids out there.

We’ve been playing some basketball in our basement too.  Again, some good games are being played.  We’re playing 2 and 3 pointers now, so he can work on his math while we’re playing.  Every time he makes a bucket, he has to give me the updated score before we continue on.  Keeping him active and teaching him at the same time is the way to go.

Still waiting for the weather to break, so we could get outside.  Already officially in spring, you can’t tell with how the weather has been.  As long as it doesn’t snow any more, I guess we’re good.

Well, there’s always Legos to play with too.  He loves that stuff.  For the first time in a long time, we dumped out his bucket of Legos on the floor in his room.  I think we sat there for at least 4 hours this past weekend, putting stuff together.  We’re trying to put together some of the big ones that we previously assembled, that have since been destroyed; it ain’t easy.  Looking through 100s of Legos trying to find that one piece..  We completed one of them, and one is in progress.  Meanwhile, he put together a bunch of his Lego Ninjago guys.  With a trip to LEGOLAND on tap for this summer, there is no end in sight.  We already have another one in the chamber for his birthday.

And then there’s of course some TV & iPad time, before he gets ready for bed every night.  Then it’s some reading and prayers before he shuts those eyes.  This has turned into a blog about my boy…

But that’s what I’ve been up to for most of the time… throw in craziness at work, and oh yeah, a little time with my wife, and I fall behind… and struggle to catch up.  So there… that’s what it is.  But then a night comes along where I try to bang out a few… here’s number one.

Shifting gears as the seasons change. So many sports and games to play, inside and out. Some real and some made up on the fly. It really doesn’t matter, though. At the end of the day or night, it is spending quality time with the kids and letting them have fun. That is the bottom line. Having fun and making memories that we will remember, and we sure hope they will, too. Soccer starts next weekend. Will baseball follow? TBD. Either way, there will be plenty of playing as the weather turns.
