March 29, 2018: It Began

Hey, what’s up.  Where have you been?  Where were you for Opening Day?

I was at work.  Yeah, I was going to work from home so that I could catch the Cubs opener at 11:30am on Thursday.  I even had a good excuse other than it being the first Cubs game of the year.  It had to be a pinched nerve.  It started a few days earlier.  I woke up, and my shoulder was really bothering me.  I figured I had slept funny… or maybe it was me and my son wrestling that did it.  Anyways, I chalked it up… until the next morning.  Yes, it was even worse; I could not find a comfortable position.  Now it was creeping down my arm; my triceps was numb.  That evening, at dinner, I told my wife I didn’t know what to do.  She made an appointment at the chiropractor, after the acupuncturist was out of town.  My appointment was 2:15pm Opening Day…

So yeah, I could have stayed home until then, but with my appointment closer to work, I made the trek in.  I was planning on monitoring the game on my phone, but I must have been a few minutes later.  All of a sudden, my wife texted me.  Moments later my brother sent me a Skype message at work.  Then I got another, and another… 4 messages within 5 minutes to let me know how this 2018 season started for the Cubs.  First pitch HR by Ian Happ; this is our year!

That’s what I thought, and said at least.  Can’t really start the season any better.  Plus it was a bonus for me since I had Happ on my fantasy team.  Funny enough, I didn’t really even want him, but with me helping to jack the bidding, I got “stuck” with him.  Now I had 6 fantasy points in the bank in the first AB of the season.  On the flip side, one of my starting pitchers, Jon Lester, couldn’t get through the 4th inning.

Rizzo went deep next.  It was a no doubter, and a special one for him, being in Florida, not too long after the shooting at his old high school.  Even though Lester was struggling, the game felt pretty much in hand, but it was still pretty close.  I left work to head to my appointment.

Ahh, the voices of Pat and Ron… in the short time from work to the appointment, I got to hear them call Schwarber’s long blast.  Now baseball was officially back.  I heard Tommy got a big double in there also, as the Cubs got the W on Opening Day.  Meanwhile, I got the crap beat out of me at the chiropractor, but felt a whole hell of a lot better… plus the Cubs won, so… it was all good.

And so it began… only 161 more to go.  Could this be the first undefeated team in MLB history?  Could this at least be the team with the best record in MLB history?  Sky is the limit after an Opening Day win started by a first pitch home run.  Let’s start planning the parade now.  But most importantly, finally, Cubs baseball is back.  Go Cubs!

Ahhh, Opening Day baseball! There is really no other opening sports event like it. You can maybe argue football since there are only 16 games, but my vote is baseball. The Cubs started their season with a 1st pitch bang from Happy…no doubt homer to right and the Cubs were off and running. Homers from Rizz and Schwarby capped off the day even though Lester struggled on the mound. The Cubs got the Opening Day W…1 down, 161 to to. It feels great that baseball is back, especially with the Bulls and Bhawks wrapping up non-playoff seasons. Welcome back Cubbies! The long journey has begun…cap it off with a World Series title! GO CUBS GO!!!
