Copper… first thing that comes to mind is the penny.  Nobody gives a crap about pennies any more; I still do.  I still follow the old saying, “see a penny pick it up, and all day long, you’ll have good luck”.  I don’t really recall if every penny I pick up brings me good luck, but I still do it.  I do remember one penny that I picked up before Game 5 of the 2016 World Series that was proceeded by some pretty good luck…

I even have a silver penny.  I think I read that those were made during the war because copper was in demand for our armed forces.  That should be worth something more than that $0.01.  Other than the penny, piping is the next thing that comes to mind.  I’m sure there are many old homes that still have the copper pipes running in the house.  And then of course the wiring…  And what about a copper pot, or maybe the now famous “mule” mug.  Still, nothing tops a penny when it comes to copper.

Copper is also the symbol for 7th year wedding anniversaries, which is what today is for yours truly.  Although, I always add 10 to our anniversary date, since that was the day we met.  That was a pretty lucky night; I wonder if I had picked up a penny earlier that evening…

I’m not sure if I’ve wrote about this before. The evening of March 30, 2001 was supposed to be an uneventful one.  It was 8pm, and I was already in bed.  I probably was tired from the previous evenings of partying that week.  And why not, I was 24 years old, and living it up.  So, I had to take some nights off, you know?  But, the phone rang, and I was asked to go out; I was asked to accompany some of my buddies to meet some ladies up at the club.  I really didn’t want to go, but… I rolled out of bed and jumped in the shower about 10pm.

I made it to the club at about 1130pm.  It was a very good crowd, with one specific lady in attendance.  She was sitting with her friend.  When she looked my way, I turned around, thinking she was looking at someone else.  Nope, it was me.  Now I needed a wingman.  I needed one of the 2 guys I was with to walk over there with me to take her friend; they both declined.  And when I looked up, it looked like I was too late.  There was another guy making his move…. oh well.  But when I looked back a couple minutes later, he was gone, and they were both still sitting there.  Side note:  that guy was somebody I knew since little league baseball.  We were rivals for years, and even in high school we met, when he got the only hit off me to break up my no hitter.  Crazy shit.

OK, it was now or never.  Nobody would come with me, she said no to one guy… the odds didn’t seem to be with me, but I went for it.  When I asked her to dance, she said yes.  So we danced… and in the interest of cutting this blog off already, the rest is history.

Happy Anniversary babe.  I was very lucky that night, and still am each and every night.  I must have found a lot of copper in my days…

The good old copper penny. Always pick them up when I see them, but usually now, that job is reserved for the kids. I point them out, and they pick them up for good luck. Copper is the 7 year anniversary symbol huh? Nice, I did not know that. Congrats on 7 and 17! Pretty cool story on how you two met, even with the boyhood rival mixed in. Happy Anniversary to both and many more!
