May 5, 2014: Say the Right Thing

As I listen to the interviews before and during Game 2 of the Hawks-Wild, I think, how easy is it to say the right thing?  Whenever teams are asked about their opponents, they are mostly complimentary, showing nothing but respect for their current foe.  What are they really thinking?  What is Seabrook honestly thinking during that pregame interview?  What is Coach Q thinking during the in-game interview?  They can’t really believe all the things they are saying about this inferior team.

It’s smart though.  You never want to give another team bulletin board material:  that little something extra to pump them up.  At this level, you shouldn’t need something like that, but you don’t want to take any chances.  Why talk down about the Wild?  The Hawks are playing with so much confidence right now, while the Wild look like they know; they know they are out skilled, out classed, and maybe scariest and most deflating, out worked.  When a team like the Hawks has as much skill as they do AND work as hard as they do, teams are in trouble.

Example 1: Goal 1.  It’s like running behind somebody who has a wide-open layup.  With the puck on Hossa’s stick on a breakaway, I’m thinking money in the bank.  It looked like Koivu was too, as the Blackhawk captain skated past him, outhustled him, and slammed in the rebound to take the lead in Game 2.  When your captain works that hard, and leads by example on the ice, it’s pretty telling.  I’m not sure how many players make that play, but there are not many players like Toews in the league.  He is a lock for the Hall of Fame already at his age.  His number 19 will be hanging in the rafters in the UC.  We need to really enjoy this guy; how lucky are we to have him?

Then comes another guy in this never ending parade of talent on the ice:  Brandon Saad.  How good is he?  Well, he’s about the 8th best player on the Blackhawks.  He’s probably a 1st liner on most teams.  When he sank the 2nd goal to put us up 2-0, it’s just another reminder of how deep this team is.  And yes, it’s been the core doing it so far this postseason, but we will need goals from other guys to win the Cup.  We probably won’t need much this series, but I’m sure the next series will be tougher.  It’s dangerous when you can beat a team with about 10 different players.

And when the Wild came out in the 3rd playing with some fire, we extinguished it.  Maybe if we let them play with a man advantage the whole time this will be a series?  Maybe that’s what the Hawks are really thinking.  I can’t help but feel like this is a bye for us.  Yes, going back to Minnesota will be tougher… a little bit.  With a 2-0 Hawks series lead, we’re in the driver seat, and sit 10 wins away from the Cup.  Is this Minnesota team different than last year?  No… they still suck, and we’re still better.  Let’s just keep hustling, and out working them, and we’ll be skating on.
