November 11, 2017: Still Winless

Saturday brought us another game for the Timber Pups.  Saturday brought us another loss for the Timber Pups.  Still winless…

Looking at the standings, at the win loss records, you could not tell.  For that age group they give every team a win every game.  So, according to that, we are still undefeated just as the rest of the league is.  However, taking a closer look at the Points For and Points Against, will show you who is who.

Most teams have approximately 70 points scored for the season in about 7 games.  Our point total was 16; I think even that is generous.  I believe they counted the 2 shots that kids from the other teams scored in our basket.  So really, we’re at about 12 points the entire season.  As far as the points against, it was about the same range for all the other teams; not for us.  While everybody else was between 70-80 points allowed for the year, we were in triple digits.  That’s about right.  This Saturday did nothing to improve upon those numbers.

We did have 2 points on the scoreboard, but I know we didn’t make a basket.  We got the phantom deuce, which made the 14-2 final look a bit more respectable.  Yet, Saturday was one of our better games played, believe it or not.

We took a lot of good shots.  I was leaning left, leaning right, leaning back, trying to body English those hoops in to no avail.  I just think if I had these kids for 1 practice per week… we still wouldn’t be that good, but one practice a week, and let these kids grow a year, and get stronger, we would be awesome next year.  But back to this game…

My son didn’t take one shot.  As usual, he handled the ball well, made some nice passes, and grabbed a handful of rebounds.  Yet, he didn’t take one shot.  He actually made 4 shots before the game; I kept telling him to shoot, like I tell all of our kids that are close to the basket, but he does not.  Maybe he just doesn’t have that shoot first mentality; that’s not necessarily a bad thing, but I know he can make it.  We’ll try it again next week.

We had all 8 kids in attendance this week, which was nice.  I’m telling you, they all played well with zero results to show for it.  Maybe during next week’s doubleheader we can break through.  With only 1 more game on the schedule before the playoffs, our chances are dwindling.  Will we even have a playoff game?

I just want the kids to experience one win.  I would love one game for each one of them to make one shot… just one.  Yes, there are no official wins and losses in this league, but they know.  You could see it; I try to keep them upbeat and positive.  It’s all about having fun at this age anyways, although losing still gets old.  Still hoping for that one time…

Tough for kids to get better without any practice…pretty weird that there isn’t at least 1 practice a week. Not that the tpups would win a game, but at least they would be better than they are and further along in their basketball learning. It is nice to learn during the games, but it is tough to teach while games are going on…that is why there should be practice. Oh well, winning 1 game sure would be nice. Disheartening to lose every game and not even really be close. Hope everybody makes a basket next week, or at the very least, takes a shot. Just shoot it!
