November 4, 2015: Glory Days

posted in: Bears | 1

OK, so if the Hate File didn’t make you feel any better, how about this.  Continuing along the 1985 yellow brick road, the Bears make their 2nd appearance on national TV in week 7.  Their 1st appearance went well in the McMahon game vs Minnesota back in week 3.  How would this one stack up?

The foe on this Monday Night would be none other than the Green Bay Packers.  Do you remember the days when we dominated these pricks?  Yes, before Favre and Rodgers, the Bears kicked these little cheeseheads around.  I hate to see all these Packer fans nowadays… jumping on the cheese wagon as it rolls through the NFL.  I wonder how many non-Green Bay residents were wearing their Packer gear back in 1985.  How many people were rocking that Dickey jersey?  How many Chicagoans had flipped to the Pack?  Yeah, crickets.  It was all about the Bears back then, especially this year.  The Packers were the Bears bitch, and it didn’t get any better.  Of course, you could refer to these as the Glory Days.

The Bears headed into this matchup a perfect 6-0… duh.  Green Bay stumbled into Soldier Field on this 50 degree October night at 3-3.  The Vegas line was Bears -10.  This bet didn’t look too good in that 1st quarter.

Green Bay jumped on top 7-0 as Lynn Dickey connected with James Lofton on a 27 yard strike.  Worried?  Nah.  We didn’t worry so much this year.  These Bears made their fans proud each and every week… OK, besides one week… in this 1985 season.  You know, the Bears had won plenty of NFL championships in their storied history, yet on the year of the 20th Super Bowl, they were looking for their first.  They had already been bursting on the scene… this night would only feed to the legend.

The Bears would score three 2nd quarter TDs, none from more than 2 yards out.  Payton had another game.  He was starting a streak of his own, with his 2nd straight 100 yard rushing performance.  He scored 2 of these shorties.  Again, with 112 yards on the ground, and 4 catches for 41 yards, along with the 2 TDs, Payton was our rock.  Next came the boulder…  William the Refrigerator Perry.  He was handed the ball, and absolutely plowed his way into the end zone from a yard out.  It was like out of a cartoon… when the character would get rolled over, and look flat as a pancake.  That’s what he did to that poor Packer chap.  Making his debut on offense the week before, Perry found pay dirt on this night in front of the national TV audience.  A historic game indeed.

What about that defense?  How could they give up that 1st TD?  I thought these guys were good.  Well, that’s all Green Bay got.  The defense added 5 sacks, 4 INTs, and a safety.  You were saying?  Yeah, by the end of the game, Lynn Dickey was replaced by Jim Zorn.  Haha…  before when the Packers didn’t have a QB, they weren’t so hot…

23-7 was the final score, and the Bears moved to a perfect 7-0.  They would face division foes 4 weeks in a row, counting this game.  The Bears were rolling, and everybody was starting to notice.  The world was falling in love with these Bears, our Bears, and it was only really beginning.

So when you’re feeling down, upset about the current state of our Bears, those Packers, and the NFL in general, just do a little research.  A little Google searching is all it will take to see who the kings of 1985 were.  Living in the past?  Nah… I ain’t Uncle Rico.  I’m just providing my daily dose of Chicago and NFL history.  It’s good to learn about where we came from.  It’s good to know how this NFL got so big.  It’s good to remember the times when the Bears were the best.  Maybe it’ll happen again one day, and then again, maybe not.  A once in a lifetime team is what I say it is.  Will the Bears be good again?  Most definitely, and I’m anxious for that day to come.  But never, ever will there be another team like this.  For all us Bears fans, this year on the calendar, including this Monday night, definitely represented our glory days.

How sweet it is when you dominate a rival! That is what the 85 Bears did to the cheese. The fridge stole the show. Ditka put him in the first time but did not give him the ball. Instead, he was a human battering ball paving the way for a sweetness td. Next time on the field, fridge got the ball and plunged in himself. A 3rd time out there, he again flattened some cheese so sweetness could walk in again. A star was born and the Bears were rolling to a 7-0 start! Oh how sweet it would be to dominate the cheese and nfl again…1 day, 1 day!
    BEAR DOWN!!!
