October 17, 2017: Last Stand

posted in: Cubs | 1

You never see it coming do you?  On the 13 year anniversary of the only MLB team to come back from 3-0 to win a series, the Cubs will look to do the same after being put to the brink by the Dodgers in Game 3.  It’s last stand time.

I’m thinking we need one of those speeches.  We’ve already had the Rocky speech by Rizzo.  Who will do it this year?

My vote is for Joe to say a few words.  I’m thinking it should go something like this:

“I don’t have too much to say boys.  We’ve had our ups and downs this year; feeling pretty down right down.  I can’t explain what’s going on.  We can’t hit. We can’t pitch.  I can’t manage.  There are times when nothing seems to go your way.  That’s kind of how I’m feeling right now.

Yeah, the Dodgers are no slouches.  They are a great team no doubt.  But so are we.  I know we are.  You know we are.  Our fans know we are.

There’s no more room for any more downs; haven’t we had enough this series?  It’s time for the ups.  Take it back to the basics boys.  Let’s play baseball like we know we can.

If we don’t, there will be nothing to be ashamed of.  3 straight NLCS appearances.  A World Series title.  The feeling of failure if we lose this series is the price of success.  We’ve climbed the mountain; anything less than that is disappointing.  That is the bar that WE set.  The position of that bar will not be changing any time soon.  Believe me when I tell you that guys.

Would you rather have it any other way?  I wouldn’t. Embrace the target, remember?  Let’s embrace this latest challenge that we have before us.  Nobody expects us to come back except for the people in this room.  At the end of the day, that’s all we got…each other.

Let’s do it for each other.  I don’t want to stop playing this year.  I think we have a little baseball left in us.  All it takes is one win to turn this thing around.  One big out.  One big hit.  One big run.  One big play.  Any one of you can be that person; I still believe in each and every one of you.

So what do you say?  Do you believe we can do it?  Bring it in guys…  We know, inside, that we are better than this.  It’s time to show everybody, again, what we can do as a team.  There is no deficit that we can’t overcome.  There is NOTHING we can’t do.  This is who we are.  We are the Cubs.  We are the champs.  Let’s get after it boys.  Champs on 3”

Hey, it’s worth a shot right?  The last couple games have been painful to watch.  I saw a tattoo the other day say “Love is Pain”…is this what he meant?  I love the Cubs.  No more pressure.  Nothing to lose now.  It’s now or never.  Go Cubs!

Last stand…already. Man, how quickly the joy of eliminating the gnats and advancing to the nlcs for a 3rd straight year can vanish in 1 week. That was last Thursday. Here we sit on Wednesday, now down 3 games to zip. Yes, there is enough blame to go around. The starters have been the lone bright spot, and that is without their best stuff, which Kyle did not have last night, but still kept the Cubs in the game. The bullpen has been horrible. Carl walks the pitcher with the bags loaded on 4 pitches knowing he was not going to swing…WTF!?! He has pitched in every postseason game so far, and that is not a good thing based on his performance. Monty looks lost. Strop and Rondon have been all year. At the end of the day, though, the biggest blame needs to be on the offense. 3 games, 4 runs via 3 home runs…that is it! The Cubs are making the dodgers staff and bullpen look other worldly, which they are not. Give them some credit, but definitely not all of it. The bats have disappeared at the worst possible time. Guys look clueless up there, KB and Rizzo included. The roller coaster ride is in the deepest of valleys right now. The Cubs need to win 4 games in a row. Can it be done? Yes. Will it be easy? No. One game at a time starting tonight. The Cubs need a big game from Jake, but more so, they need the damn bats to come around. Stop swinging for the fences. Stop trying to pull every ball. String some hits together and swing the bats like we know you can. No excuses for the Cubs play. Frustration outweighs any other emotion because I know the Cubs are better than this. It is like the Cubs are not even putting up a fight. The dodgers are good…yes. Unbeatable…hell no! Whoever speaks or gives a speech should also slap everybody across the face. Wake the F up. The Cubs have dug the biggest of holes. No more get them tomorrow. The time is now. Backs against the wall. Must win. Time to come together as a team and decide your fate. A 2nd nlcs sweep in the last 3 years, or a step in the right direction with a W. Win tonight, then Win tomorrow. The series and pressure will mount and shift back to lala. I believe I’ve said it before. Without stating the obvious, if the Cubs start hitting, they can win 4 in a row. Before they can do that, they have to end the 3 game slide and get a W tonight. Snap out of the funk and get it done. We never quit! We never quit! We never quit! That’s Cub! Bleeding blue…Cubbie true…GO CUBS GO!!!
