October 18, 2017: Our Window

posted in: Cubs | 1

I’m trying to cheer myself up… about our Cubs.  Down 3-0… looking done… still hoping inside, that they have one more run left.  We’ll find out soon enough.  Until then, I need to write; that’s why I started this whole thing anyways.  It wasn’t to make a career out of it (yet) or gain thousands of Twitter followers; it was done as therapy.  The next session begins now.

Our window… I still see an open window, and no, I’m not thinking about jumping out of it.  The window I see is open wide enough though…  It’s a window that doesn’t look like it’s closing any time soon.  It’s one of those windows that will remain open for years, barring some sort of catastrophe.

Yes, it’s a familiar window for Chicago sports fans.  Keeping it in my lifetime, the first window opened in 1984 for our Bears; it actually stayed open until 1991.  During that 8 year stretch, the Bears made the playoffs 7 times; man how I wait to see our Bears in the playoffs again.  Yes, famously, or infamously if you may, we only cashed in on that jackpot once during that timeframe.  We only won 2 more playoff games after that Super Bowl win in this window.  I’d don’t think the window I’m looking through looks like that…

Then there was the Bulls… When MJ came into our lives in 1984, the Bulls started a stretch of making the playoffs 14 consecutive years.  This was of course topped off with 6 NBA titles.  That was a real nice window; yeah, I think this one kind of looks like that…

Or maybe like a more recent one.  The Chicago Blackhawks, who contrary to popular belief, have a window that is still open.  They’ve currently made the playoffs 8 straight years, winning the ultimate prize, the Stanley Cup, 3 times.  And yes, although we may be closer to the end than the beginning of that window, I think we have a number of good years left in us, including this year.  Even this window sounds good…

The window that I’m looking at is one that we are unfamiliar with as Chicago baseball fans.  Although the Sox are trying to build that window, they have never had one.  Yes, they did have one ultimate prize; that was an open and shut case.  The Cubs were familiar with that one and done, or two and done as recent as 2007 & 2008, but they never had a World Series title.  Let’s not forget, we have one now… that will always make me smile.

But back to the window I’m looking at for our Cubbies, it opened in 2015, and there is no sign of it closing.  3 years, 1 World Series title; I can live with that.  I can live with 6 more playoff appearances, and 2 more World Series titles in this window.  Of course I would love more… of course NOTHING is guaranteed.  That’s why it’s so important to take advantage of every opportunity we get.  I know we’re not used to getting these opportunities, but I definitely don’t want to take this for granted.  I want to win every chance we get.

That’s why I’m writing this, because I’m upset.  I’m upset because we’re not seeing this Cubs team play the way they can.  Yes, I know this season hasn’t been 2016; no season will be.  I know we’ve been up and down, more than a normal season.  I know we have our weaknesses.  I know LA is a good team.  I know we can play better… the series isn’t over quite yet, even though it sort of feels like it.

Let’s send this thing back to LA.  Let’s end the year at Wrigley flying a couple more Ws.  Let’s turn up the pressure on these guys.  Yeah… I still have faith in this team, if not in this series, the next year, and the next year… and this isn’t the old “wait for next year” Cubs fan either.

Next year is part of a bigger window… and the year after that… and the year after that.  Although the Cubs haters will get a laugh when the yearly postseason visit doesn’t end in glory, we’ll keep enjoying our new window.  It’s a nice window… one I’ve never seen before with the Cubs.  Yeah, I’m actually still happy.  If we can’t pull off the miracle this year, that’s OK… because we’ll be back in the mix next year.  If these Cubs are going home for this year, it’s good to know that they aren’t going anywhere for the foreseeable future.  We WILL realistically have many more chances at this.

OK, I feel better.  This therapy is great.  Now let’s fly that W…  Go Cubs!!!

Frustration is the biggest feeling with this 3-0 hole. Anger…yes. Disappointment…yes. But frustration tops them all because the Cubs are not playing near their potential. If the Cubs play a better game and lose, so be it, but I want to see the Cubs play their game. I want to see all of this offensive talent come together to score runs. I want to see the W flags flying high tonight and tomorrow night. It can happen. It did happen. It will happen. While the Cubs window of greatness seems to be wide open, I am not ready to give up on this season. I will worry about the Cubs future later. The Cubs are the defending World Series Champs! That 2016 title will never go away, but opportunities like this are not given each year. The struggle was real for the Cubs in 2017. This may be the biggest struggle right now at the worst possible time. But, and there is a but, these are not the Cubs of the past. They have faced 108 years of pressure and WON. A 3-0 hole? That is nothing. It is not time to wave the white flag to give up. It is time to wave the W flag and live to see another day. The season does not end tonight or tomorrow night. The ultimate defense starts tonight with some offense. You can do it Cubbies. We have believed all of our lives. We believed last year. I believe this year. The Cubs series of game 7s begin tonight and end on Sunday. 4-0 last 4 elimination games. Time to make it 5-0! Bleeding blue…Cubbie true…GO CUBS GO!!!
