October 25, 2015: Back to the Time Machine

And no, I’m not talking Back to the Future, Cubs in 2015 stuff; that’s over and done with.  Great year.  Looking forward to next year.

I’m talking 1985 Bears baby; they can never take that from us!  With the extended Cubs playoff run, we took a hiatus from a lot of stuff, including the walk down memory lane we were doing with those Bears.  We left off with a victory against the Skins in Week 4 to run our record to 4-0.

In week 5, the Bears travelled to Tampa Bay to take on the Bucs for the 2nd time in this young season.  As we know now, the Bucs went on to finish 2-14 that year.  As we also know now, one of those victories did NOT come against our Bears, although they did put up a good fight… again.

The Bucs jumped out to a 12-0 lead.  Donald Igwebuike kicked 2 FGs.  Remember him?  He made those field goals, but missed an extra point, after the Steve Deberg to Kevin House 21 yard TD pass.  Kevin Butler kicked a FG of his own to cut it to 12-3 at the half.  I wonder how that halftime speech went…

Maybe it went about the same as it did a month earlier, when the Bears headed to the locker room down 28-17 vs this same team on the home opener.  I would have loved to be a fly on the wall during that season.  With all the personalities on this team, I can just imagine some of the stuff going on in there.  Ditka, Ryan, Singletary, McMahon, Dent, Wilson, Fencik…  man I bet those were some good “talks”.  Well, week 1, after halftime, the Bears stormed out and outscored them 21-0 to get that first W.  This week, there was a similar result.

The Bears outscored Tampa 24-7 to run their season opening winning streak to 5.  McKinnon another TD pass, and Sweetness 2 rushing scores.  This Bears team was now 5-0 and were now headed west for another showdown.

There were many memorable weeks during the 1985 season.  To this point, it’s week 3 that sticks out; the comeback win in the Metrodome.  Week 5 at San Francisco is next.  The last time these 2 teams met, the Niners were busy smacking the Bears out of the playoffs in the 1984 NFC Championship game.  You think we were pumped for this matchup?

I almost want to throw in the DVD to watch that game again.  We’ll talk through it soon as we try to catch up on all non-Cubs business, as I try to stay current on my blog.  Man, the Cubs sure did put a lot of other things on hold; Sunday night was potentially Game 7 of the NLCS, which was also my Mom’s birthday.

That’s OK though; she’s a Cub fan, she would have understood when we all showed up to her birthday decked out in Cubs gear, and had to rush her through the festivities to get mentally prepared for the looming win or go home game.  It didn’t happen, but we still celebrated.

30 years ago the Bears were on their way to making history.  30 years ago my Mom was younger than I am now with 3 kids under the age of 9.  She did a pretty damn good job.  Thanks Mom, and Happy Birthday.  I hope we can celebrate a Cubs World Series for one of your birthdays coming up…  keep that October baseball shirt handy, I think we’ll see some more of that coming soon.

Bears should have won a few more superbowls with that team. Ditka was probably the worst coach ever to win a Super Bowl, he was more of a showman and a salesman than he was a coach. In the following two years after the super bowl win they got eliminated in the 1st round by joe Gibbs and the redskins and then in 88 got embarrassed at home on a frigid day in soldier field by Bill Walsh and the 49ers. But like you said cant take the 85 season away from you.

Blasphemy AL! Talking about DA coach that way… but yes, you are right. This team should have won way more than 1 title, but that’s not all Ditka’s fault. We didn’t keep all the guys we should have, and we did have some key injuries. So, no dynasty… guess we’ll have to settle for having the best single year team in NFL history.
