September 13, 2017: 18 To Go

posted in: Cubs | 1

That’s it… 18 games to go out of that 162 games we started with way back when.  The good news is:  the Cubs are in 1st place.

More good news came when they defeated the Mets last night at Wrigley.  They were reeling a bit… after giving life to both the Brewers and Cardinals this past weekend.  They are nowhere near as good as the Cubs can be.  The key is, can be.  They definitely needed a day off to mentally and physically regroup for the homestretch.  It showed on Tuesday night; I’m ready to go 19-0 and put a damn bow on this division title.

Kris Bryant is the key in my opinion.  He’s always a key.  Remember who got us going when we were down 3-1 to the Indians?  He got us going again last night with a huge 3 run home run.  It started off as one of those games we’ve seen way too often this year.  Guys getting on base, us not being able to drive them in.  Wasted opportunities have been one of the keys to us being normal again this year.  So Kboom going BOOM was just what the doctor ordered.  I expect him to zone in down the homestretch and carry us if need be.

There are other ways to get going besides the long ball, like the way we scored our first run.  A Quintana safety squeeze which scored Schwarby.  Remember what got us going in the Dodgers NLCS last year?  Yeah, a Zobrist bunt single.  If need be, and the need certainly will be, we need to manufacture runs.  We can do it.  We haven’t been consistently good at it, but yes, we can do it.  Like Baez for example… not swinging for the fences, and moving a runner over.  Like Bryant in an earlier at bat, making contact while Zobrist was on the move.  Like hitting a ground ball to the right side to advance a runner to 3rd… like hitting the ball in the air for that sac fly… like laying down an opportune bunt.  I compare it to the Blackhawks when they struggle to score; get in front of the net and get those dirty goals.  Same for the Cubs.  The home runs are glorious, but it’s the dirty runs that will provide that much needed spark, and those much needed Ws at the end of the day.

Yes, it felt good to get the win, especially with the Brewers and Cardinals both winning.  2 game lead with 18 to play; nobody said it would be easy.  So it’s 18 to go… it would be nice to get the starting pitching zoned in too, kind of like Quintana was yesterday.  He has been good by the way, regardless of what some think.  I don’t regret that trade with the White Sox for one second, regardless of how well Jimenez plays.  3 earned runs or less in 9 of the 11 games started; that’s just old reliable Jose.  And we got him for a while… need Jake to come back too.  It would be nice for him to come back and give us a few quality starts as we finish off 19 in a row to end the regular season.

Yes, and the Indians just hit 20 in a row…  they’re tuning up.  Now it’s our turn.  Knock this homestretch out of the park, and get back to the postseason for a 3rd straight year.  Go Cubs!

KB, KBOOM, Kris Bryant, reigning NL MVP! The Cubs need you. Basically, the Cubs need everyone on their roster to start hitting with runners in scoring position. Bottom line, get big hits with guys on. Maybe this 3 run bomb is the start of a torrid 2nd half of September to lead the Cubs into the postseason. Whatever it takes Cubbies! Check those egos, lay some bunts down, move a runner over, steal a base, make a diving play, and get to a 3rd straight postseason. The nl central race is tight. The Cubs do not need to play that way. Taking care of the mets (how far they have fallen) in game 1 of this series should hopefully lead to a sWeep! Wrigley is and has been rocking, ready to explode. Let’s hope the Cubs oblige. GO CUBS GO!!!
