September 27, 2017: 157 and In

That felt good.  Once I saw that Addison Russell HR stay fair down the third base line, I knew the game was ours.  Ding dong the Cardinals are dead is what I sent out.  Adding two more in the frame gave us the 5-1 lead that eventually became the final score.  Pop champagne!

In baseball, more than any other sport, making the playoffs is a HUGE deal.  It’s a big deal in any sport; waiting for the Bears to make another appearance.  But with 162 games in the baseball season, ending that long, winding road with a playoff appearance, is nothing to be taken for granted.  I’m glad we actually won the game that clinched it for us.  It would have been nice either way, but to celebrate right after that final catch is made… and this year with that happening to be in St. Louis… yeah, that was sweet.

I’m glad that the Cubs celebrate each and every victory; I really think that’s important.  But the party that kicked off after the clincher was something to behold.  All the beer, champagne, Crown Royal, and cigars that were being passed around; now that’s a party!  And rightfully so.  You don’t just fall into a playoff spot in baseball, kind of like the Bulls did last year.  There is no luck involved with making the playoffs in the majors.  In the second season, maybe, but to punch that ticket to the postseason, the credentials need to be there.

And the Cubs have them, none more important to start the second season, than that 2016 World Championship Trophy they have.  They’ve climbed the mountain already; that’s more that can be said about the so called top competition.  The Nationals, Dodgers, Astros, and Indians have no idea what it takes to win it all.  To have their backs against the wall, in a game, in a series, and come back to win it all.  The Cubs know how that feels; they’ve done it.  And because of that, there is no team that scares me.  The Cubs have as good of chance if not better than any of the other postseason participants.  Will it happen… again?  We can finally start talking about that.

The magic number is 0, and after everybody recovers from their hangover, the focus will be on the Nationals.  Ah, Dusty’s boys… the big arms of Scherzer and Strasburg… the recent return of Bryce…  The Nationals, who punched their ticket a while ago, will now have the pleasure of hosting the Cubs in Game 1 of the NLDS come next Friday.  I can’t wait.

Until then, it really is time to celebrate; it’s time to cherish this accomplishment.  For all of us, this is the first time the Cubs have made the playoffs 3 straight times; not since the famous 1906-1908 Cubs has it happened.  Who would have imagined?  The Cubs… not just a flash in the pan once every 5-10 years… The Cubs, actually having sustained success, just like Theo said we would.  The Cubs, with 3 appearances in a row, STILL at just the beginning of their window.  Remember all those years in a row the Braves made the postseason?  Could the Cubs possibly go on a run like that?  Hopefully… with more World Series titles though.

As I’ve said before, and said again last night, watching the celebration, we are truly living in the golden era of Cubs baseball.  Because of what we’ve been through, I don’t think I have to tell you to enjoy every fricking second of this.  I know I am.

Wednesday night, on the 157th game of the year, the Cubs punched their ticket; 157 and in!!!  Now it shifts to another number; the one that the Cubs were jumping around, chanting in the locker room.  11 more!!!  Welcome back boys!  Go Cubs Go!!!

    Step 1…complete!
The 162 game grind is almost over, and the Cubs have clinched a playoff spot for the 3rd straight season. How sWeet does that sound? Winning in stl and celebrating on their field and in their clubhouse was awesome. If they hadn’t already, they know who the new big dog is in the nl central. The Cubs won the division for the 2nd consecutive year. The remaining 4 games mean nothing as the Cubs will be playing the nats beginning Friday, 10/6. Am I worried? No. Yes, the nats have arms with strasburg, scherzer, and gio to go along with bryce, murphy, and others. Just like last year, the playoffs will not be a cake walk. Nobody is going to lay down to the Cubs. The defending champs will have to do everything possible to keep going…and they will. How sWeet would it be to go back to back? 11 wins stand in the Cubs way right now. A lot more to come on that as game 1 is a week away. Enjoy the nl central crown. Celebrate what it means as the season comes to a close. Rest up. Get healthy. Set up the playoff rotation and be ready to defend the title. The Cubs are battle tested and hungry. Be afraid nats…hahaha. GO CUBS GO!!!
