April 1, 2021: Feeling Young Again

OK, let me just say this is NOT an April Fool’s joke. No, that would be something like we did to my wife in the morning, telling her she had a flat tire; she bought it for about 2 seconds before it hit her. But she got me back… telling me the Bears had traded for Russell Wilson; I started going through Twitter frantically, pulling up ESPN… that was a good one. Or when my son was brushing his teeth, telling him that his lip was bleeding, as he quickly turned to the mirror to check for himself. No, this is nothing like that. This is true, 100% true. The first day of every baseball season, Opening Day, has me feeling young again.

There’s a lot of days when I feel old, like the nights when I can barely stay up past 10pm, or all the aches and pains that are felt day to day. My son keeps me young though; being able to do “kid” things with him is awesome, kind of like this day every year. I know it’s technically just 1 of 162, but that’s the whole point I guess; it’s that “1” part that is special. All that stuff folks say about Opening Day… it’s true. It’s the day when hope springs eternal, for every single team throughout the majors. Fans of most teams already know if they’re going to have a real shot this year, so winning or losing one game isn’t going to matter in the big scheme of things; because of this, some may not get as pumped for the first game of the baseball season… not me though. I don’t care if the Cubs are awesome or if they’re going to suck… well, yes, I do care about that… a lot quite frankly, but you get my point right? I get excited for every season, especially when the Cubs are undefeated… even if it only lasts one day.

Yeah, thankfully this year, I will be off work, and be able to park myself right in front of the TV to watch this first game of the year; heck, I may even have a beer. It’s a celebration bitches! Baseball is back! This year may even be a bit more special than normal, with the whole pandemic cutting last year’s season in more than half, keeping fans out of Wrigley for an entire year. I wonder how that impacted teams’ performances last year. I’m not saying it would have made all the difference, but having fans in the stadium could have swayed things, especially for those teams, like the Cubs, that have a ton of them. Not only did we miss packing Wrigley, we missed filling up the stadiums on each of their road trips. Hearing that support at home is expected, some teams get more than others, but hearing that support on the road… there aren’t many teams, if any, that are on the same level as the Cubs. Yes, that will all start to change this year. In Chicago, Wrigley will be allowed 20% per game for now, yet even that was bumped to 25% for this first contest; I’m sure there are other cities doing more. Whatever that number is, it’s a good thing; we’re headed in the right direction, so I’m good with that.

So let me sit down and enjoy this first pitch of the year; let me enjoy seeing the undefeated Cubs take the field for the first time. Sure, it’s cold, but the sun is out, the sky is blue, and there are fans back in Wrigley again. What more can we ask for? A win? Let’s go Cubs!!!
