April 11, 2021: Memorable Baseball

Back to some Baseball Seasons episodes… We left off with the Royals beating the Cardinals in the 1985 World Series; just felt like I had to repeat that. That brings us to 1986; what a memorable year that was. I remember a lot of this season.

It started with Roger Clemens; he was one of my favorites growing up. He started this season with his famous 20 strikeout game against the Mariners in April. Oh yeah, then he went on to win his first 14 decisions! One of my other favorites was Dwight Gooden. Each of them was in their third year in the majors; each of them would lead their teams into the playoffs, then the World Series; they both pitched against each other in the All Star game too. The Red Sox and the Mets would provide us with one of the most memorable World Series of all time. This year would also give us two of the greatest LCS’ in history.

In the NLCS, the Astros faced off against the Mets; speaking of great pitching… I think of Nolan Ryan with the Astros, but that year, it was Mike Scott who was something ridiculous, winning both games against the Mets in the NLCS in complete game fashion. He had helped the Astros clinch their division by throwing a no-hitter in the clinching game; how cool is that? Or how about one of their other pitchers… a guy we’re familiar with nowadays in Jim Deshaies. A couple days before that clincher, he struck out the first 8 batters in a game. But the Mets had much more besides Doc too… Bob Ojeda, Sid Fernandez, and Ron Darling made up a pretty good rotation. But the Mets also had some kind of mojo going for them that season. They pulled out Game 3 with two runs in the 9th… and then of course the classic Game 6 series ender. The Mets scored 3 runs in the top of the 9th to tie it, came back after a Billy Hatcher home run in the 14th, and then finally scored 3 runs in the top of the 16th to win; the Astros scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 16th to come up just short.

The ALCS was no slouch either. The California Angels lead the Red Sox 3-1, and were winning by 3 runs in the top of the 9th inning in what was supposed to be the clincher in Game 5… then the Red Sox showed some magic of their own. Don Baylor would hit a 2 run homer to pull the Sox within 1 run, before Dave Henderson would come up against the Angels closer Donnie Moore. I’ll never forget that 2 out, 2 run homer that he launched to give the Red Sox the lead. The Angels actually tied it in the bottom of the 9th, before the Red Sox pulled it out in the 11th. The Angels never recovered from that comeback. The series went back to Boston for Games 6 and 7 where the Red Sox outscored them 18-5 to punch their ticket to the World Series.

Of course, this World Series doesn’t need any introduction, does it? OK, well, let me just say this: the Red Sox had already blown their lead in the bottom of the 10th inning in Game 6 BEFORE Buckner made the infamous error. Yeah, 2 outs, 2 strikes, up 2 runs, nobody on… and the Mets pulled a victory from the jaws of defeat. They scored 1 run before Mookie Wilson came to the plate, then a wild pitch allowed the game tying run to score, THEN the ball rolled through Buckner’s legs. Something else maybe forgotten in this one is the other big home run Dave Henderson hit in the top of the 10th to give the Red Sox the lead; the ALCS hero with the game winning World Series home run? It just wasn’t meant to be. Yes, after the Mets snatched Game 6, we returned to Shea for Game 7. And although the Red Sox lead that one too, 3-0 heading into the bottom of the 6th inning, the writing was already on the wall… kind of like Game 7 in the 2003 NLCS… The Mets stormed back with 8 runs in the next 3 innings to capture their 2nd World Series crown; the Red Sox World Series curse would continue. Wow!

The 1986 Mets were a crazy team… ton of characters, guys who liked to party, guys who like to fight… it was a team that didn’t last, but for that one special season, they won it all. I’d actually like to read a bit more about them. Since 1969 happened before my time, I don’t have the same hate for the Mets as some Cubs fans, although I do recall what happened in 2015… Anyways, since I’m done with my Sid Luckman book, maybe they’ll have a little something about the 86 Mets in the library when I get back. As for right now, 1987 is up next; not as famous, but another 7 gamer. Talk soon.
